The London Borough of Islington is seeking to recruit a School Crossing Patrol Officer. The vacancy is in Blackstock Road N5, supporting the children of St Joan of Arc and St John’s Highbury Vale Primary Schools.

To ensure the safety of children while crossing the road at a designated point on their way to and from school, whilst ensuring that the discharge of these duties does not endanger other road users. To assist adult pedestrians to cross the road at the designated point when this serves the best interests of road safety, such as assisting the elderly or physically impaired.

We’re keen to hear from you if you are responsible, able to demonstrate traffic awareness, and are keen to show dedication and commitment to help make the roads of Islington safer for our children and other pedestrians. The job involves working for 10 hours per week during term time, typically an hour in the morning and an hour in the afternoon. Training and a uniform will be provided. The successful applicant will help to ensure the safety of pedestrians crossing the road at a designated location during specific times. You will have experience of working with children, a good understanding of the Highway Code, clear verbal communication skills and be both reliable and punctual.

In addition, you must be fit enough to stand for long periods of time, be prepared to work in all weather conditions, have good eyesight and hearing and be confident to stop traffic.

To ensure the safety of pedestrians crossing the road at a designated point during specified times, without detriment to the welfare of other road users. Providing a safe environment for children to cross both on their way to and from school.

To provide a safe environment for children to cross a busy road both on their way to and from school.

To direct and control children waiting to cross the road.

To stop traffic, giving clear signals to drivers and ensuring that the traffic remains at rest until all pedestrians are safely across.

To use all uniform and equipment provided for the safety of the School Crossing Patrol (SCP), children and all other members of the public, especially when stopping traffic on the highway.

To carry out duties in accordance with the Highway Code’s rules and in compliance with the national School Crossing Patrol service guidelines.

To regularly assess the risks associated with operating at the crossing site to identify any problems. All identified problems and defects to be reported to the Road Safety Team.

To carry out the Council’s policy with regard to the SCP Service which include Health and Safety procedures.

To report any problems or difficulties to the Road Safety Unit.

At all times carrying out responsibilities/duties within the framework of the Council’s Dignity for All Policy.

To ensure all services within the area(s) of responsibility are provided in accordance with the Council’s commitment to high quality service provision to users.

Carry out duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Council’s Health and Safety Policy and relevant Health and Safety legislation.
