**Detailed job description and main responsibilities**:
The post-holder will be accountable to the Clinical Director (Dr Deborah Bomfim) in the first instance and ultimately to the Divisional Clinical Director of the Royal National ENT and Eastman Dental Hospitals (Dr N Kumar) and will report to the Clinical Lead within the specialty. The post is within the Specialist Hospitals Board, led by the Divisional Clinical director and Medical Director.

**Job Plan**

The new post-holder(s) will be expected to discuss and agree a detailed job plan including personal and professional objectives with the Clinical Lead and Clinical Director within three months of his / her start date; and the Consultant may be required to undertake a prospective diary exercise to inform this process.

The majority of the job plan for Programmed Activities related to direct patient care follows a team-based approach. The part of the job plan related to wider departmental activities, supporting professional activities and personal objectives is more individually tailored. In addition to clinical activity based within the UCLH clinical sites, the post holder may be expected to contribute to activities based in outreach clinics within the local CDS and help develop links with Bedford CDS.

This role requires the consultant to undertake non-emergency work during premium time (defined by the Terms and Conditions - Consultants (England) 2003) as set out in the job plan for this appointment, which will vary from year to year as determined by the needs of the service. Acceptance of the offer of employment will be interpreted as mutual agreement of this requirement between the consultant, his or her clinical manager and the Trust. The contract of employment for this position will reflect this requirement.

Indicative job plan:

- Monday- Wednesday- a.m.- 1 in 4 sessions: dental treatment under general anesthesia
- 3 in 4 sessions dental treatment clinic
- Weeks 1,2 - SPA
- Weeks 3,4,5 - Treatment clinic
- p.m.- Review clinic
- (1 in 4 finish time 15.15pm as TOIL for GA session)- Weeks 1,2 - SPA
- Weeks 3,4,5 - supervision of postgraduates/trainees

Clinics currently run from 08:30 to 12:30, 13:15 to 17:15.

The General Anaesthetic service runs from 7.30am till 6 pm.

**Direct Clinical Care Activities**
- To be responsible for the care and management of patients referred to the Department, with particular emphasis on complex cases and multidisciplinary care.
- Work closely with the Clinical Lead to ensure that departmental service and quality standards and targets are met, and work with the team to ensure these are fulfilled.
- Participate in the training activities of the Department, supervising the clinical work of postgraduates and junior hospital staff as required.
- Carry out all administrative duties relevant to the above.
- Support the new spectrum of activities of the Department and assist in maintaining and implementing the continuing changes introduced as a result of training demands and needs.
- Assist with the development of the clinical service in the Department and help to foster good relationships between the Department and General Dental Practitioners, Specialist Practitioners and other health care providers.
- Provide consultant cover as and when necessary

**Other Programmed Activities**
- To undertake administrative duties in the Department and Division as required by the Clinical Lead, Clinical Director and Divisional Clinical Director.
- To ensure that patient management issues relating to clinical effectiveness are in place.
- To undertake an active part in the audit activities of the Department.
- Participate in the programmed teaching activities of the Department as required.
- Work effectively as part of a Department with both an NHS and an academic component. In this context, he/she will foster effective collaboration and teamwork with all hospital and academic staff in the Department, Division and the Hospital and Institution at large.
- Assist and participate as required in the continuing professional development activities of the Department towards General Dental Practitioners, Specialist Practitioners and other health care professionals.
- To undertake mandatory training and continuing professional development as required by the Trust to ensure the safety and quality of patient care.
- Undertake any other appropriate professional duties, which may be required by the Clinical Lead.
