Environmental Regulation Adviser

Glasgow, United Kingdom Scottish Water Full time

Together we are Trusted to Serve Scotland.

How’s this for job satisfaction: at Scottish Water we look after Scotland's most precious natural resource. From source to tap, we’re guarding Scotland’s reputation for refreshingly pure water, and caring for our environment at the same time.

Naturally, the work we do is closely regulated. Our Wastewater Strategy & Environmental Team (WWS&ER) play a pivotal role in building trust with our external stakeholders and regulators. Right now, we’re looking for an Environmental Regulation Adviser to join the team.

What you’ll do

As an Environmental Regulator Adviser, you’ll support our Wastewater Operational teams and Capital Investment Delivery teams with regulatory advice and environmental expertise.

The teams remit covers the whole of Scotland, but this role will primarily be supporting the West area with all compliance and licence issues. Your customers will mostly be Scottish Water people - we like to keep them happy. But you’ll also work closely with our Environmental Regulator, SEPA, who we want to build great relationships with too.

You’ll take a lead in liaising with external parties, including SEPA, NatureScot and local authorities. You’ll formulate and coordinate regulatory communications, chair meetings, and interpret and relay information.

You'll be advising colleagues and the wider business on regulatory guidance and policy. You’ll know how to put that into presentations and reports that make their point clearly.

What you'll need

You'll have a sound understanding of European and UK environmental legislation, particularly Scottish regulations, the regulatory framework within which Scottish Water operates and environmental regulatory reporting requirements.

You’ll have a practical knowledge of pollution control, wastewater collection and treatment. It would be handy if you have a qualification in a scientific discipline, but it’s not a must-have if you have equivalent experience.

Making informed decisions is a big part of the job, so you’ll need to be a problem-solver with great critical thinking skills. And, of course, lots of this is digital-first, so your IT skills will be solid too.

Delivering presentations and speaking to stakeholders will call for confidence and strong communication and negotiation skills. You’ll be able to challenge and seek agreement in highly complex situations.

Because you’ll need to attend some key meetings face-to-face and make site visits throughout the West of Scotland, you’ll need to hold a full UK driving licence.

Looking out for you

While the work we do is important, it’s not the only thing that matters. That’s why we make sure you have everything you need to find a good work-life balance.

This role is full time (37 hours per week), Monday to Friday with a flexible work pattern. You’ll get plenty of time to recharge with 38 days of holiday every year (including public holidays). And you can even buy five more if you need a little extra time. You can also take paid time off to volunteer in your community.

When it comes to major life events, we have family-friendly policies around adoption, maternity, and parental leave. And for the everyday? Applications with part time or flexible working requirements will also be considered.

For your future, there’s our pension (the ‘know-what-you’ll-get-when-you-retire’ kind), as well as life assurance.

As for some nice extras? You can expect an annual company bonus. Not to mention access to SW Splash - handy rewards that can save you money on holidays, bills, and shopping.

The not-so-small print

The starting salary for this role will be between £35,384 and £47,924, dependant on experience.

You’ll need to live within commuting distance of one of our office hubs in the West or Central Belt, e.g., Edinburgh, Stepps. We operate a hybrid working model, so you can expect to spend some days working from home, some days working from the office and some days out on site visits.

A few final things worth knowing

Let us know if there are any changes we can make to our recruitment process to help you perform at your best. Lots of our people have disabilities or neurodiverse conditions (including some of our recruiters). We're also aware that some people might be experiencing temporary challenges because of life events, like menopause. We’re very used to making adjustments, so please don’t be afraid to ask.

As part of our commitment to developing a flourishing Scotland, it’s important that all our employees are Scottish taxpayers. If you join us, your home address will need to be in Scotland. If you don’t already live here, you'll need to commit to moving here within your first three months.
