Salary £55,000.00 - £61,600.00 per annum
Full time 40 hours and 5 days per week.

**Role Purpose**:
The Head of Information Technology plays a key role at the National Portrait Gallery. The post holder is responsible for ensuring that the overall IT infrastructure and system resources support the organisation’s needs, as such the Head of IT leads in the development of plans and strategies in this area. Directing and overseeing the operations of a small team of 5 permanent Technical Specialists. The post holder is critical in the establishing of cyber security standards and behaviours.
**Key Accountabilities**:
- Strategic Leadership_
- The Head of IT is responsible to ensure that the Gallery’s strategy for the development and best use of IT systems meets the needs of the organisation’s strategic and operational requirements in terms of reliability, effectiveness and value for money.
- IT development management; researching, recommending and proposing new technology to fulfil strategic objectives.
- Accountable for network security and for delivering compliance with standards such as Cyber Essentials and PCI DSS.
- Consulting with the Senior Management Team as appropriate on operational and database matters across the Gallery, keeping up to date with changes and developments (within the Gallery and externally) and ensuring good two-way communication with other departments at all times.
- Liaising regularly with other teams to understand their technology requirements and communicate information about current and upcoming IT projects.
- Developing the IT team and the service it provides, by proposing improvements and innovations and by supporting colleagues across the Gallery in relation to their various projects.
- Managing the Health and Safety within IT, including ensuring risk assessments are undertaken, kept up-to-date and that staff are familiar with them.
- Maintaining appropriate Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery Plans for Gallery IT systems.
- Reviewing IT infrastructure needs to ensure all Gallery employees continue to have access to quality IT systems and services without disruption, and to support proposed upgrades, refurbishments and extensions.

- The Head of IT will also be responsible for managing the multiple systems and technologies and demonstrate an understanding of how they are deployed in medium-to-large organisations:
- People and Financial Management_
- Motivating the team and managing performance, undertaking regular performance reviews, and encouraging team members to engage with their work and to attain a high level of performance at all times.
- Promoting best-practice processes in areas including incident management, problem resolution and change control.
- Providing technical knowledge in relation to incidents and support requests where necessary.
- Managing the Information Technology budget effectively, including costing proposals, budget tracking and providing financial information when required.
- Ensuring revenue generating opportunities for the Gallery are maximised.
- Relationship Management_
- Setting out, developing and regularly reviewing the Gallery’s IT strategy, and ensuring that it is shared and communicated with all other Departments across the Gallery.
- Managing vendors, including contract negotiation, regular service reviews and service level agreements.
- Building and establishing strong work relationships with both colleagues and external contacts at all levels, and networking with IT professionals from other museums and galleries as appropriate.
- Project Management_
- Raising the profile of, and promoting, effective project management and software development lifecycle processes within the team.
- Being an IT stakeholder in projects run by other departments.
- Overseeing a number of projects that involve IT as the Project Manager.
- Developing, reviewing and, if necessary, revising option appraisals and designs for expansions of the Gallery’s IT infrastructure and networks.

- Promoting sustainable working practices and reducing the environmental impact of the Gallery’s operations in line with its Sustainability Statement.
**Key Experience, Skills and Criteria**:
- Minimum of five years’ experience within the IT industry, preferably with experience in a technical role as well as experience of line managing a team.
- A proven ability to manage during periods of change is advantageous.
