The role is part of the Maintenance Section’s Building and Grounds Team. The team is made up of various trades and grounds staff. The Carpenter Joiner position is integral to the sections operation, as they are required to carry out essential building fabricmaintenance. Decisions are frequently made on the spot as to how the task is to be carried out, taking into consideration the materials, the methods, the costs and cooperation with the host department. The overall purpose of the role is to visit sites anddepartments to ascertain the problem that has been requested, to ensure that the work is done in a safe, efficient and economical manner. The role holder will be responsible for all aspects of Health and Safety from the start to finish of each job. They willhave experience of most aspects of the carpentry joinery role including using industrial workshop machinery. The role holder will respond to emergencies involving building fabric failure/breach and effect remedial repairs within the shortest possible timescaleto a high standard of workmanship. The role holder will receive work from various sources but always having a work order number to ensure there is a paper trail from start to finish of each task.

Construction, alteration and repairs of 1st and 2nd fixings of a various nature throughout the University’s Estate/Buildings, using most kinds of hard & soft woods, manmade materials (MDF, Plywood etc) and other specialist carpentry and joinery buildingmaterials from technical drawings and rough sketch drawings.Maintains and repairs internal and external fabric of the University’s Estate/Buildings i.e. fitting door frames and hanging doors, window frame repairs, general joinery repairs that may arise.Having decided the remedial action required, advises the supervisor if necessary to do so. Obtains materials through stores and/or supervisor. Implements repairs leaving in full working order.Carries out passive fire work in association with the UniversitiesFire Office and the Universities third party inspection specialists.Keeps departmental/building staff aware of job progress at all times. Reports to departmental/building staff and own supervisory staff on completion of each job, particularly in respectto any follow up actions that may be required.Construction of fixtures including fitting out laboratory/office/workshop/ situations from technical drawings and rough sketch drawings. Maintains and repairs departmental equipment/fixtures. Prepares workingdrawings when necessary, estimating and requisitioning of materials.Glazes doors, windows, skylights, greenhouses etc., using clear, coloured, patterned, safety, horticultural and double glazed units, in a variety of types of situations i.e. metal, wood,UPVC, beaded, puttied or mastic formats. Paints and preserves any timbers that require it before their fixing, i.e. doors, windows, post, external joinery, so that they are fully sealed and treated.Repairs and overhauls lock, latches, bolts etc., of whichsome cannot be renewed because of their age. Assists all other trades when and where necessary.Uses hand held PDA to access work orders and updating information regarding tasks as required. Has to frequently solve puzzles as to why things are not workingproperly.
