Chancellor’s Fellowships are designed to support talented early career researchers to develop into a leading research-active academic at the University of Edinburgh.

Within the **School of Health and Social Science **, the Chancellor’s Fellow appointment will be linked with the Edinburgh Centre for Research on the Experience of Dementia | The University of Edinburgh (ECRED, an interdisciplinary group of dementia researchers, people with lived experience, practitioners and representatives from a range of dementia organisations. ECRED works to explore and develop theories, methods and impact around our understanding of living with dementia. Globally, people living with dementia face stigma and increased disability through structures and social taboos that place them on the margins of society. The reality for many people living with dementia is that they disengage and are excluded from activities such as civic engagement and research, and denied basic human rights: in a culture that values autonomy, cognition, and individualism, they are no longer considered fully human. Both fiscal and ethical imperatives dictate that we can no longer continue in the same way.

ECRED has a strong and active commitment to interdisciplinary working and many of our current projects include collaborations with researchers, clinicians and practitioners in a range of practice settings, with voluntary sector organisations and with other academics throughout the UK and internationally as well as across disciplines of social work, counselling, the arts, nursing, psychology, philosophy, geography, and social policy.

We are looking for a researcher who can engage in and conduct cutting-edge, impactful interdisciplinary research with those living with dementia to expand our understanding of what it means to be human. The perspective of the person with dementia is central to this work. As ECRED works to reposition dementia in the public, policy, third sector, academic, health, and social care spheres, it is looking for a Fellow who can engage with the breadth of stakeholders, including people with lived experience and those from a range of sectors external to the University.

Central to ECREDs work is a wider shift beyond a purely biomedical understanding of the disease to include emotional, psychosocial, and spiritual aspects. The Centre engages in work that pushes the boundaries of what is possible in dementia research, policy change, and in society. Therefore the successful applicant must be comfortable in working across and beyond disciplinary and methodological boundaries.

The Centre’s primary methodological expertise draws on interdisciplinary and coproduced methods, using creative and qualitative tools. Additionally, all work has some elements of coproduction. We are seeking someone with experience of, and/or interest in these approaches.
