The Post Holder will be the specialist practitioner for the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care and standard setting in relation to infant feeding and for the Implementation of the UNICEF UK Baby Friendly Initiative Accreditation Project.
- To ensure the adoption of the UNICEF UK Baby Friendly Initiative Standards within the Neonatal Unit/s.
- To provide effective leadership around infant feeding to all professional groups within Neonatal Services. Be an effective leader and role model to junior staff and others.
- Work flexibly as a member of the ward team and in support of the ward manager to ensure standards are being maintained, evaluated and where necessary improved.
- The Post Holder is required to be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
- The post holder liaises with and represents the service and the Wales Infant Feeding Network.
- To ensure the implementation of the UNICEF UK Baby Friendly Initiative Standards within the neonatal unit/s, by providing training, developing policies and guidelines, producing documentation and information, auditing practice and managing the assessment by UNICEF
- The post holder will be the specialist practitioner in the implementation of the UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative across the neonatal service.
- The post holder will provide leadership within the multidisciplinary team in promoting best practice in relation to infant feeding. Support work in partnership in the assessment, planning and evaluation of patient care relating to infant feeding.
- The post holder will provide support for women and advise colleagues on complex issues involving infant feeding.
- To work as a member and supervise the nursing team, to deliver responsive and flexible neonatal nursing care.
- Develop and maintain systems and processes to ensure individual and department training records are upheld.
- Monitor and evaluate care to initiate any action required in relation to infant feeding.
- Act as an expert within own speciality using expert knowledge to adapt plan of care to suit individual needs within defined parameters and objectives.

- To function as an autonomous, competent skilled practitioner in the assessment and delivery of high standards of care and treatment, acting as a key worker for families, and lead professional for the nursing team.
- Establish, formulate and update policies related to infant feeding within the Health Board and collaborate with other agencies.
- Communicate effectively and provide specialist advice to all members of the multidisciplinary team in a range of situations to promote teamwork and enhance good working relationships.
- Acknowledge and accommodate barriers to communication and understanding, including speech, hearing, language and emotion.
- Provide feedback at meetings detailing success reporting, good practice, new initiatives and future plans around breast feeding.
- Demonstrate a variety of effective communication skills with women and their families, communicating complex, sensitive information, in what can be emotionally demanding and distressing situations to enable them to be involved in their care.
- Contribute to development and education within the multidisciplinary team and actively participate in all aspects of the ward/department training programme and team meetings.
- Be able to effectively communicate highly complex information with learners during teaching/training sessions.
- Work in partnership, involving staff at the earliest opportunity and managing and influencing change.
- Liaise with, influence and negotiate with staff across boundaries.
- Ensure effective communication networks exist with other Health Boards, statutory and voluntary agencies in relation to infant feeding.
- To work in collaboration and partnership with other agencies who deliver services to children and young people. To support (personally and through the team) the smooth transition from the neonatal unit to or on the post-natal ward.
