Peer Support Mentor

**Job Purpose**:
To reduce the likelihood of a child coming to the attention of the Youth Justice Services by:
- Providing individual and group interventions with pupils with additional needs and work to improve outcomes for children and families.
- With supervisory support from the BRS, work in partnership with staff to strengthen pupils capacity to engage in the learning process.
- Working in a multi-disciplinary manner, with other agencies involved in the child's life to avoid the child's involvement in anti-social behaviours which may bring them to the attention of the Youth Justice Service.
**Principal Accountabilities (on a daily basis)**
**Supporting Children**
- Developing and maintaining a supportive and empowering relationship founded on mutual respect, trust and the strengths of individual child.
- To support the unstructured times of the school day by encouraging engagement in physical activities such as football, games club or outdoor physical equipment providing individual support and group interventions as part of the school day.
- To work under the direction of the Headteacher to address individual pupil needs as they arise, and help to promote and facilitate understanding of a child's needs.
- Use persistent and proactive interventions when working with pupils to enable positive changes in their lives, such as regularly listening to reading or supporting the child to complete learning tasks.
- To work directly with pupils with the aim of developing positive relationships and providing appropriate support to address a range of needs including disruptive and challenging behaviour. While the role will be based primarily at one school the post mayalso entail working in other settings to offer additional support to our young people. The post holder will work under the direction of the Headteacher or their representative.
**Sharing in the delivery of Lessons or Group Work**
- To work in partnership with schools and the voluntary sector to support children and to encourage positive life choices, including post 16 pathways. This may include working with a child outside the classroom under the direction of staff, or participatingin lessons as an additional adult, offering advice and guidance to complete learning tasks.
**Other duties and responsibilities**
- To participate in meetings in an active and constructive way when required to do so.
- Operate within policy, legal, ethical and professional boundaries when working with children, including the expectations of Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSiE).
- To report any safeguarding concerns to the Safeguarding team in each school.
- To participate in individual supervision and team meetings.
- To maintain up to date knowledge and skills as required by the role.
- To alert line manager of any significant changes or events may impact upon the child's wellbeing once these become apparent.
- To undertake other duties and responsibilities appropriate to the salary grade and the overall purpose and principles of the Peer Mentor job description.
