We are looking for motivated, proactive, dedicated and committed Out-of-Hours Medical Laboratory Assistants (OOH MLA) to join our team in this interesting and busy Blood Science laboratory.

Based in London, the post holder will operate in the busy Synnovis Blood Sciences Laboratory at King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. The Blood Sciences laboratory, one of busiest in the UK, performs blood group analysis and provides blood and blood products to support the varied services provided at King’s which includes the Foetal Medicine Unit, Liver Transplant Unit, a large obstetric department, Bone Marrow Transplant Unit and a designated Major Trauma Centre.

The Blood Science Laboratory is a fully automated consisting of three sections.

The Haematology section is equipped with 6 Sysmex XN series FBC analysers, SP50, TS10Up and ESR interrliner connected on a Sysmex XN-9100 Haematology track processing approximately 3000 samples a day.

The Coagulation section consists of three analytical systems 2 x CS-5100 and a CN-6500 which process approximately 1000 samples a day

The Routine Biochemistry section has three Roche Cobas 8000 platforms (c702 and e801) two are connected to the Roche Cobas Core Module track which are linked to the p671/p612 pre-analytical unit; a Manual section with Radiometer ABL90 Flex Plus, AI OsmoPRO, Spectrophotometer for Xanthochromia analysis and Roche c513 analyser processing approximately 7,000 samples a day.

The analysers operate through the Sysmex EPU and Roche cITM middleware systems that are connected to the WinPath LIM system.

You will be working in a team of approximately 50 staff which includes 15 dedicated out of hours MLA staff members working alongside a team of 20 Out of hours Biomedical Scientists dependent on the shifts you are rostered, which would include day shifts, evening and night shifts as well as weekend and Bank Holiday shifts.

Your development and learning

You will have a suite of learning opportunities available through The Synnovis Way Development programme, the Scientific Learning and Development Fund and the ViAcademy through which you can receive funding / support for advanced qualifications.

The post holder is expected to support and assist Biomedical Scientists in the receiving and sorting of a variety of patient specimens, centrifuging, tracking of specimens, loading/unloading samples onto analysers, filing of samples post analysis, checking pending files and retrieving samples from cold storage and assist with analyser maintenance.

The role will include laboratory cleaning duties and disposal of waste and maintaining bench stocks of consumables and reagents. They will be required to work as part of a team within the sections of the laboratory.

Concentration and attention to detail are essential to these processes and form the greater part of the working day.

To offer a helpful and professional service to all visitors and telephone callers and will assist under the direction of qualified Biomedical Scientists in the provision of a high quality service.
