These positions are available for existing civil servants on level transfer or promotion. Secondments and loans will be considered on an individual basis.

**Background**:
HM Courts and Tribunals Service is responsible for the administration of criminal courts, civil courts, family courts and tribunals in England and Wales working with an independent judiciary to provide a fair, efficient and effective justice system. Currently, HM Courts and Tribunals Service is embarking on a period of significant change which will require strong leadership in this critical role, operating in a culture of openness and honesty.

**Overview**:
The Court of Appeal Criminal Division hears appeals against convictions, sentences given by the Crown Court (even if the conviction was in a magistrates’ court) and confiscation orders imposed by the Crown Court

**Key Responsibilities**:
**Court Clerk**
- Thoroughly checking case papers and producing template orders prior to hearings, querying with Lawyers and Casework Officers as appropriate to ensure knowledge of the cases and potential outcomes.
- Carry out in court IT tests for attendees as and when required.
- Managing the courtroom and order of the list, including liaising with senior members of the judiciary, counsel, ushers, witnesses, Cells, List Office and Case Officers as appropriate to ensure hearings proceed effectively and judges are aware of the presence of victims or families.
- Daily management of the in-court IT equipment, dialing prisons nationally for appellants to attend their appeal by video link.
- In the absence of an usher, administering oaths to witnesses and managing interpreters.
- Accurately and promptly producing own signed orders and orders for retrial for the Registrar’s signature; identifying instances of immediate release where the appellant is absent and ensuring the order reaches the prison immediately; dealing with any queries on orders.
- Identifying any need for and ordering a draft judgment on cases which remain live after the hearing, liaising with Case Officers to update them as necessary.
- Updating office database with results; informing Costs section of witness or interpreter attendance.
- Personally undertaking ex post facto determinations of bills of costs or casework duties to assist other business areas within the Division.
- Maintaining knowledge of sentencing legislation and criminal justice service procedures; maintaining a working knowledge of Division and wider Royal Courts of Justice procedures.
- Carry out ad hoc tasks as designated by management.

**Essential Skills and Qualifications**:
5 GCSE passes (or equivalent) grades A*-C, or NVQ Business Administration level II or administrative experience.

Relevant computer skills to undertake the level of work required.

The post holder is required to work in a flexible way and undertake any other duties reasonably requested by line management which are commensurate with the grade and level of responsibility of this post.
