Switchboard Operator - Band 2
37.5 Hours per week on a rolling 4 week rota.
We have an exciting opportunity for a variety of hours within the OUH Trust Switchboard. The post holder may be required to work a variety of shifts Monday to Sunday.
The Trust Switchboard answers calls, for all four hospitals within Oxfordshire. It is an extremely busy and fast paced Department that plays an important role in guiding external and internal callers and to connect with the correct person or department. Experienced team members support response of emergency teams to medical incidents.
Our team consists of up to 6 operators during the day and 2/3 during out of hours, and a supervisor on duty for majority of the day.
A comprehensive training will be devised to support you in familiarisation with the team and role. Training shifts are programmed flexibly during Monday to Friday between 08:00 & 20:00. See Job Description for full details.

CALL HANDLING
Answer calls to switchboard in a polite and courteous manner.
Respond quickly & calmly to all alarms and initiate emergency procedures.
Log all emergency call details and monitor the alarms implement the appropriate procedure.
Call security for inbound helicopters.
Be responsive to varying levels of switchboard traffic.
Report faults to the appropriate service provider out of hours.
Hand over any relevant information for colleagues on incoming shifts.
Handle university clinical trials calls out of hours.
BLEEP MANAGEMENT
Operation of multitone bleep system including various types of bleeps.
Divert bleeps as requested.
Exchange faulty bleeps.
Provide replace batteries.
RADIOPAGERS
Connect calls to the pager bureau.
In the event of a bleep failure support Ops/Resus to issue back up pagers.

- Fire Policy
and should make themselves familiar with the ‘local response’ plan andtheirrole within that response.
RESPONSIBILITIES FOR HEALTH & SAFETY
The post holder is responsible for ensuring that all duties and responsibilities of this post are carried out in compliance with the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974, Statutory Regulations and Trust Policies and Procedures. This will be supported by the provision of training and specialist advice where required.
INFECTION CONTROL
Infection Control is everyone’s responsibility. All staff, both clinical and non-clinical, are required to adhere to the Trusts’ Infection Prevention and Control Policies and make every effort to maintain high standards of infection control at all times thereby reducing the burden of Healthcare Associated Infections including MRSA.
All staff employed by the ORH Trust has the following key responsibilities:
- Staff must decontaminate their hands prior to and after direct patient contact or contact with the patient’s surroundings.
- Staff members have a duty to attend mandatory infection control training provided for them by the Trust.
- Staff members who develop an infection (other than common colds and illness) that may be transmittable to patients have a duty to contact Occupational Health.
