Pathology Department (Stockport NHS Foundation Trust) Medical Laboratory Assistant

The Pathology department at Stepping Hill Hospital are seeking a Biochemistry medical laboratory assistant (MLA) to join the trust. The successful applicant would be joining a passionate and highly motivated staffing group providing diagnostic services to the hospital patients and wider community.

The successful post holder will assist HCPC registered Biomedical Scientists within the biochemistry department and will work under both direct and indirect supervision. They will undertake general clerical, analytical and miscellaneous support activities within the biochemistry department.

Regular working hours will be Monday-Friday 9.30 - 16.30pm (including 1 hour unpaid lunch). When required will be asked to cover out of hours shifts in specimen reception.

Undertake and assist Biomedical Scientists with biomedical investigations, in accordance with departmental standard operating procedures.

Perform under indirect or direct supervision an extensive range of automated, semiautomated and manual techniques.

Perform maintenance, reagent and consumable replenishment, calibration and pre-analytical processing (including extraction steps) for a variety of equipment within the biochemistry lab up to the point of IQC acceptance and technical validation.

To assist and perform a range of technical and scientific activities, including testing internal and external quality control samples.

To assist in the daily monitoring, organisation and working of the department.

Support the maintenance of ISO accreditation/UKAS requirements for the department.

To support specimen reception and cover the specimen reception shifts to provide 24/7 service, where required. E.g., due to sickness and annual leave.

Use PPE and good lab practice to safely handle and process a variety of patient sample types e.g., blood, urine, faeces and other body fluids.

To ensure a safe working environment for staff and visitors in accordance with local and national Health and Safety policies and procedures.

Perform general clerical duties associated with the work of the Laboratory, including filing, telephone answering, photocopying etc.

Perform other miscellaneous duties under supervision and according to protocols.
