Do you think good books about Business and Management can make the world a better place? If you do, we’re looking for an Editor like you to manage Palgrave Macmillan’s fantastic Business and Management lists in a full time, 12 month fixed term, maternity cover position.You’ll be responsible for a range of scholarly (and, depending on your experience, possibly professional) books, ranging from authoritative, definitive works routed in the traditional core of the disciple to cutting edge reports from the hottest new areas of research. The books you’ll sign will connect ideas & thinkers, research & readers, theory & practice.

Ideally you will have demonstrable experience with both business books and academic publishing, but if you only have experience in one of those and a genuine interest in the other - let’s talk.

Reporting to the Editorial Director for Business & Management, you will be responsible for acquiring and publishing a program of research monographs, Open Access books, Handbooks, textbooks, and major reference works for the scholarly market, to maintain and develop the list.

**Role Responsibilities**:

- Identify authors and support them in developing and producing their projects
- Solicit, read and evaluate book proposals offered by authors, as well as assess their suitability for the list
- Meet goals set by editorial management such as contracts signed
- Liaise with appropriate Marketing and Sales colleagues to ensure the list is profitable (e.g. overseeing the provision of information/ copy required for promotional and selling activities, forecast discussions, etc.)
- Negotiate contract terms with authors
- Remain a point of contact for authors/editors throughout the publication process
- Research market trends on a national and international level
- Manage the back-list, make decisions on publishing potential and new editions of successful titles
- Contribute towards team/departmental projects
- Business travel (domestic/international) as required
- Any other reasonable task required by the line manager

**Experience, Skills & Qualifications**:
**Essential**:

- Educated to degree level or equivalent
- Experience of independently commissioning projects
- Experience of working in a team as well as independently
- Experience of building effective working relationships
- Experience and knowledge of the editorial process
- Experience of the academic / educational market and publishing
- Excellent English language skills
- Have excellent verbal and written communication skills and be numerate and IT systems-literate, with a sharp attention for detail
- Proven organisational skills
- Ability to multi-task and work to tight deadlines
- Be a diplomatic and assertive individual who is able to work with demanding stake-holders
- Be able to organise and prioritise numerous tasks and be able to work on their own initiative
- Be resourceful and proactive in dealing with queries
- Ability to think creatively and solve problems
- Have excellent team-working skills to deal with people within the company and externally at all levels
- Excellent networking skills
- Ability to work independently within a supportive team environment

**Desirable**:

- Experience of, or interest in, business and management publishing
- Experience of commissioning Open Access books
