**About West Midlands Fire Service**
Our job is to keep safe the 2.9 million people of the West Midlands. We serve a diverse population across Birmingham, Coventry, Dudley, Sandwell, Solihull, Walsall and Wolverhampton.
We’re the second largest fire and rescue service in England, covering an area of 902 square kilometres which include areas with the highest risk in England outside of London.
**What we do**
We operate 38 fire stations across the West Midlands with 1,164 firefighters working to make the West Midlands safer, stronger and healthier.

**The Role**
The Independent Chair will be responsible for chairing each meeting of the Board and ensuring they are properly conducted in line with the terms of reference. This will include agreeing the agenda for each meeting of the board and ensuring that all members of the Board show due respect for process, that all views are fully heard and considered and to determine when consensus has been met.
Knowledge of public sector pensions schemes, relevant law relating to pensions and the Nolan principles are essential. Previous experience with the Firefighters’ Pensions Scheme and as an Independent Chair are desirable.
The Board meets four times annually virtually, and the Chair will also be expected to periodically attend meetings of the Scheme Manager (the Authority Audit and Risk Committee) in order to deliver updates on Board activity. This can also be done virtually.
As an Independent Chair, applicants cannot be a member of or be closely related to anyone who is an active or retired member of the Firefighters’ Pension Scheme. They cannot be an employee of or be closely related to anyone who is an employee of West Midlands Fire and Rescue Authority or be an elected member of or closely related to someone who is an elected member of the Authority.

There will be no specific remuneration for the undertaking of Independent Chair. However, travel and subsistence expenses in line with public transport or car mileage may be claimed with a valid receipt. The Service’s expenses policy will be used as the basis for travel and subsistence for all pension board members.
