**Role**

As a Specialist for Species Recovery you will support colleagues to provide expertise on the conservation and management of species in England. Based in the Science Directorate, and working closely with others, you will have the opportunity to develop skills that enable you to interpret evidence to provide expert, practical advice across Natural England and to Government. You will also work with external NGO partners and consultancies to enhance the evidence base, collaborate and manage projects and achieve environmental outcomes.

This role is a key part of our succession planning and we are looking for individuals who have expertise or interest in a specific species group or taxa, and who want to develop these skills as a future specialist in this area.

**Key tasks/ accountabilities**
- Support the coordination and project management of Natural England multi-species projects, working with multiple species specialists, Principal Specialists/Advisers and external groups.
- Working with our species specialists, support and manage projects (both internally and with partners/contractors), with a particular focus on the Species Recovery Programme and follow procurement procedures when issuing contracts.
- Commission and assess evidence reviews.
- Work alongside species specialists to acquire a broad knowledge of ecology.
- Work closely with the Principal and Senior Specialists for species recovery to provide key technical support for species-associated work for the Environment Bill and subsequent legislation.
- Support work on large national data analyses and assessments arising from tasks such as the Environment Bill D4 and D5 indicator trajectory work, and potential revision of S41 Priority species list.
- Support work on IUCN Red List Assessments
- Support colleagues to provide integrated species advice about how species - particularly priority species - can benefit from the implementation of Local Nature Recovery Strategies.
- Take internal commissions from across the organisation, ensuring the needs of species are fully considered and that evidence is quality assured.
- Be qualified to at least BSc level in an ecological or life sciences discipline, or, show equivalent applied experience.
- Have good project management skills.
- Have proven knowledge of, and experience in, species conservation; with specific expertise in a major species group.
- Have a thorough appreciation of the Environment Bill and its provisions to facilitate species recovery.
- Understand the key role of IUCN red list assessments and underlying categories and criteria.
- Be effective in communicating (verbally and in written form) to multiple audiences, internal and external.
- Have knowledge of and experience in literature searches, writing reports and evidence reviews, be able to interpret, synthesise and summarise scientific papers, technical reports, etc. into clearly structured understandable reports.
