Sleep Technologist

The Band 5 post holder is required to work as part of the multi-disciplinary team towards the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders and contribute to and maintain excellent standards of patient care and clinical practice.

One of the principle roles of this position is to ensure that sleep diagnostic data is accurately collected, recorded and saved and therefore excellent IT skills are essential. It also involves daily face to face interaction with patients to deliver education and instruction and requires excellent communication and reporting skills.

The post holder will work as part of the wider team to ensure the smooth and efficient running of the service and will be supported by the senior members of the team. In-house and external training is offered as part of this role.
Job Purpose
- To take the lead responsibility for delivering home sleep studies at the RNENT&EDH
- To take part in delivering overnight polysomnographic studies
- To support CPAP follow-up clinics
- To be responsive to the needs of patients having particular regard to adequately training them in the use of sleep study medical devices
- To have and maintain a sound understanding of current UK and European safety legislation, in particular those relating to medical equipment
- To contribute to the department's quality procedures
- To take responsibility for ordering overnight polysomnography materials, stock management and financial management (including consumables and equipment held as stock items for the Sleep Study Unit)

The Sleep Study Unit is responsible for sleep diagnostics and therapy services on the RNENT&EDH site, including CPAP clinics and carrying out overnight polysomnography and home sleep studies.

The RNENT&EDH is closely associated with sleep services within Respiratory Medicine - UCH, National Hospital for Neurology & Neurosurgery.
Key Results Areas

The person appointed to this post will have significant experience of physiological measurement. They must be skilled in interacting with patients, in particular the outpatient context. A working knowledge of disorders of sleep and respiration is essential, and an understanding of equipment used to monitor and treat patients with OSA is mandatory.

They will be well organised and able to work on own initiative and without supervision. They will have good time management skills and prioritise and manage own workload. They will be flexible and able to adjust commitments when required and work to deadlines. On a day-to-day basis they must be able to swap between the various demands of the job, as the situation requires (for example to provide CPAP patient support while undertaking sleep studies). The appointee should be proficient in the use of Windows based PC systems and be able to use Excel and Word to set up documents, record and extract information and write reports. Knowledge of networking would be an advantage.

Continuing professional development is actively encouraged for all staff. It may be possible for the person appointed to continue a programme of study for further qualification, especially in order to enhance professional knowledge and skills, depending on the demands of routine service.
