Our mission is to empower places - from rural areas to major cities, from prosperous places to those facing challenges in the modern economy - to bolster their potential through boosting economic growth. We lead within the UK Government on regional policy, working on a range of initiatives including support for regenerating towns and high streets, local growth plans, devolution, and economic intelligence. We work at different levels, from the small neighbourhood to the large sub-national strategy.
The Areas Directorate is committed to the welfare of all our people. We take mental health and work-life balance seriously. As Deputy Area Lead you will be an expert on economic growth and levelling up across a sub-regional area in the South West or West Midlands, building strong knowledge of local politics, economics, challenges and opportunities. You will manage relationships with a range of external stakeholders including chief executives, economic development officers, HE/FE and other institutions, local government associations, local business organisations, and others. Your role will compliment that of the Area Lead for the Area.
You will use your knowledge to support DBT and DLUHC priorities, holding expertise on sectors, investment, relevant industries, devolution, and local government reform, using your knowledge of your place to influence policy and delivery. You will develop strong day-to-day productive relationships with policy officials across a range of areas, including housing, sector teams, and transport. You will often lead on advice regarding particular challenges.

- Work with the central funding delivery team, other area team colleagues and delivery partners to spot risks, challenge poor performance, and tackle issues as they arise. As part of this, you will lead on corrective actions, drawing on support from others.
- Working with local partners to understand the priorities and funding opportunities within your area, and ensuring they are ready to deliver new projects and programmes.
- Develop an understanding of government priorities across a wide policy span and inform cross-Whitehall discussions with local insight.
- Work with central policy teams to provide answers to enquiries from local authorities and other organisations on issues related to funding assessment and delivery.
- Input into policy or delivery design and corporate activity, using your local knowledge and intelligence to influence and guide policy / programme design work, ensuring local delivery considerations are included in policy making.
- Provide advice on key local challenges or opportunities, providing quality advice on complex issues to SCS and Ministers as appropriate.
- Work with your team and others, using your relationships to proactively lever solutions where issues arise.
- Provide a range of high-quality written work including, responses to relevant ministerial correspondence, briefing materials for ministerial and/or senior civil service visits and written submissions on particular place specific issues as they arise.
