Situated five miles from Bristol, Clevedon and Portishead, the school is set within 60 acres of glorious parkland. First impressions are extremely important so it is essential that the Downs Preparatory School gardens are attractive and well looked after.

The Gardener will assist in maintaining and improving our beautiful, landscaped gardens. You will work with our existing gardener and will report to the Head of Grounds and Gardens.

This is a full time role and flexibility is required as work days could vary in length and there will be some weekend working required, particularly in dry or adverse weather to protect the planting. Therefore personal pride in your work and a love for gardening is key.

A full driving license and own transport to get to work are essential as are physical strength, resilience and the willingness to work outside in all weathers are required.

Work uniform, lunch, refreshments, and parking are provided all free of charge.

Rate of pay £10.42ph with potential for negotiation depending on experience.

**Outline Job Description - Gardener**

Our Gardeners plays a vital role in the presentation of The Downs Preparatory
School. First impressions are very important when welcoming visitors, prospective and current parents. The School’s extensive grounds and gardens require significant upkeep and should be in prime condition at all times.

**Summary of the role**:Help to deliver an annual rolling plan for the maintenance of the School’s gardens
- the seasonal planting/re-planting of schemes in beds, borders and planters.

**Responsible to**: Head of Gardens and Grounds

**Duties include**:
Planting, feeding and watering.

Weeding beds and borders.

Propagating and bringing on plants in the greenhouse.

Clearing paths, including use of herbicides.

Sweeping paths and courtyards.

Pruning and hedge trimming.

Assisting with costing planting schemes, researching various suppliers to obtain maximum value for money.

Monitoring the condition of garden tools and equipment to maximise their effectiveness and lifespan.

Helping to organise the greenhouse to ensure that the space and resources are employed effectively.

Monitoring the effective harvesting of rainwater for use in planters and pots.

Working with colleagues in the grounds and maintenance teams in order to

Ensuring that all estate work is completed in order of priority. This can include maintenance of the sports pitches and lawns and various other routine maintenance tasks.

**You will be required to**:

- Attend regular team meetings.
- Attend any required training events.
- Comply with the School’s policies with regard to Health & Safety, e.g. use of personal protective equipment.
- Take immediate action to minimise risks or concerns identified about the School’s Estate, reporting the risk or concern immediately to the Estates and Facilities Manager or Bursar.
- Follow guidance on the safe storage of garden tools and chemicals, such as herbicides in accordance with the School’s control policies.
- Be alert to the School routine and calendar to help ensure that gardens works are prioritised in line with events taking place.
