**Purpose of the role**:
**Overview of the role**:
To lead a new initiative within the pathology team in ZSL’s Wildlife Health Services department. We are looking for an experienced molecular biologist to design and run a molecular laboratory dedicated to the diagnosis of diseases within our living collections and for our zoo-based conservation teams. This would involve developing (designing or adapting), validating and running molecular assays such as qPCRs and ELISAs for important direct and serological detection of wildlife pathogens such as elephant endothelial herpesvirus, encephalomyocarditis virus, _Chlamydia_ spp., _Mycobacterium_ spp., _Toxoplasma gondii_. This work will initially be performed on equipment shared with the Institute of Zoology, but the successful applicant will be expected to outfit their own laboratory over time. The successful applicant would also be expected to develop their own research questions in the field of wildlife diagnostics and supervise MSc students.
**Key responsibilities**:
- To design, set up and run a molecular diagnostic laboratory.
- To develop and conduct molecular diagnostic assays on samples collected from animals held in ZSL’s zoos and possibly elsewhere. This will involve DNA and RNA extraction, conventional PCR, real-time PCR, reverse transcriptase PCR, NGS, LAMP, and interpretation of sequence data.
- To develop serological assays (e.g. ELISA, AGID etc.) for retrospective diagnostics on stored samples
- To be responsible for the safe running of the molecular diagnostic laboratory, ensuring compliance with Health and Safety protocols and procedures.
**About You**:
Key experience and skills:
- Relevant molecular diagnostic laboratory experience (e.g. nucleic acid extraction methods, conventional and real-time PCR, phylogenetic analysis, serological testing)
- A postgraduate degree (at least MSc or equivalent) or equivalent experience in biological sciences or a related scientific field
- Experience designing, troubleshooting and running molecular assays
- Strong history of publishing peer-reviewed papers, patents or equivalent technical writing
