Qualified and enthusiastic assistant gardener sought at Mayen Estate

This role is a rare opportunity to be an assistant gardener of a mature, private 2-acre walled garden. We are looking for an experienced and passionate person who works well as part of a team.

Mayen Estate is a small family-run estate, near Rothiemay in Banffshire and is home to Mr & Mrs A Cheyne and family. Our 700 acres are filled with extensive gardens and lawns, as well as meadows and woodland, set in the Deveron Valley.

We have five self-catering holiday cottages on the Estate and we offer Fishing on the Mayen House Beat of the River Deveron, as well as host Clay Pigeon Shooting.

The grounds, gardens and walks at Mayen Estate including the Walled Garden are not open to the public, but can be enjoyed by our holiday guests.

We are seeking an Estate Gardener and Assistant Gardener to work as part of our small and enthusiastic team to continue to develop and maintain the estate’s stunning grounds and gardens.

The walled garden features glasshouses, a fruit cage, vegetable beds, cut flower beds, mature fruit trees, herbaceous border, rose garden, mature yew hedging, box hedges, water features, ornamental trees, shrubs and perennial flowers.

Duties include:

- Assisting with the management and upkeep of the walled garden and glasshouses
- Growing of organic vegetables and cut flowers from seed to serve the needs of the house and holiday cottages
- Growing perennial plants and shrubs from seed and by propagation to continue to develop and enhance the gardens
- Working alongside our groundskeeper / gardener on the maintenance and development of historic rock gardens, meadows and ponds
- Supporting our groundskeeper/ gardener with maintenance and development of holiday cottage gardens on the estate

Desirable skills, experience and qualifications required:

- RHS Level 3 or above
- Permaculture Design Certificate or above
- Ability to plan sowing and planting
- Ability and willingness to support student gardeners on summer placements
- Ability and willingness to host gardening courses and workshops with members of the public
- An attention to detail, good housekeeping and timekeeping.
- Maintenance of plant, equipment, and tools

A passion for biodiversity, team working and growing vegetables and flowers from seed is essential.

Salary is competitive and based on experience

20 - 30 hours per week
