The role

The Weather Forecasting department within the Monitoring and Forecasting Service Line is responsible for providing reliable weather forecast services to our clients to enable efficient planning and informed decision making across multiple industry sectors including renewables, media, construction and oil and gas.

The department is now seeking an Assistant Marine Weather Forecaster to be based in our Wallingford, Oxfordshire office to report to the Departmental Operations Manager. This is an exciting opportunity as you will not only get to work in a client facing role where you are the first point of contact for our clients, but you will also be actively encouraged to take part in innovation, offering you significant influence over research and development activities. The department operates a 24 hour / 7 day a week service, so this role will require you to work shift patterns across both day time and night time shifts. Whilst we cannot guarantee particular hours, we do try to accommodate individual preferences as much as possible. The role is based in Wallingford, but you will be providing forecasts for multiple regions across the globe and, once you have gained sufficient experience, there will be the opportunity to work offshore, should you like to.

- You have a passion for all things weather You will enjoy interpreting a variety of forecasting models and communicating the output to people to enable them to safely plan and undertake activities. Whilst you are happy to work independently, teamwork is at the core of every shift to ensure work is completed to a high standard and on time. We also encourage development outside of forecasting so if you enjoy working with forecasting/climate datasets and making plots/graphs/images then we want to hear from you.

Who you’ll be working with:
Here’s what a typical day would be like:
- Preparation of land-based forecasts (Weather Consultancy Services) primarily in the UK and in North West Europe;- Preparation of marine weather forecasts for offshore operations after suitable in-house training under supervision;- Maintain meteorological watch over all locations / areas for which forecasts are being produced. Check all forecasts and initiate contact with Clients as necessary in case of severe weather threat;- Assisting the Forecast Manager undertaking climatological and hindcast studies;- Development tasks and personal study such as scripting, product development, writing blog articles etc. We want you to find your strengths and develop them together to grow our business.

Who we’re looking for:
Essential-
- Ability to work to schedules and to understand a variety of weather situations around the world;- Good problem-solving abilities;- Ability to manage information;- Ability to make sound decisions and prioritise;- Ability to work within a team;- Good communication skills - written and verbal;- Self-motivated.

Desirable- MMet in Meteorology;- Basic scripting skills (e.g. Python);- Prior weather forecasting experience in a client facing role;- Understand the importance of working within a Quality environment.
