Oxford, United Kingdom Aspire Oxford Full time

In the **NHS Liaison and Diversion** program, **Peer Support Workers** use their personal experiences to help people involved in the criminal justice system. They act as role models and receive training and strong managerial support to excel in this unique role. You will be able to learn and develop new skills, which can be valuable for future employment in the sector. The work environment is supportive and positive, creating an ideal setting for your professional growth.

**Essential Criteria for this Role.**

We are looking for a Peer Support Worker with **personal lived experience of the criminal justice system.**
- Have you ever been arrested, **convicted of a crime or served a custodial sentence? If yes, we want to hear from you.**

**Please reference your experiences with the criminal justice system and (if applicable) additional challenges in life that you think will be relevant to this role.**

**Equality and Diversity**

**We are a Disability Confident Employer**

**Overall Purpose of Job**

This role is part of Aspire's Prison Leavers Project, which **helps people in prison transition back into society**.

**The Peer Support Worker will be working in the NHS**. Your day-to-day management will be from the NHS, and you will receive support from a senior member of the Aspire team. Your role involves providing information, advice, support, and encouragement to service users in contact with the NHS Liaison and Diversion Service and the Reconnect service. This could be in places like Magistrates, Crown Courts, and community settings. Using your own life experiences, you will act as a role model to inspire engagement and promote recovery among the individuals you support.

**As a Peer Support Worker, your focus is on gaining skills, knowledge, and experience in supporting individuals involved in the criminal justice system.** This could include helping people with vulnerabilities connected to their past criminal behaviour. The support could also extend to the caregivers (like friends and family) and other community members who support the individual. The goal is to help them with their daily needs related to health, social care, and overall well-being, aligning with their personal recovery goals and connecting them with community services.

**Key tasks and responsibilities**

The tasks and responsibilities listed here provide an overview of the work expected from the person in this position. It is not a complete list of all the tasks that may come up, and employees will be expected to perform other reasonable duties as needed from time to time.
- The person in this position must show their commitment to Aspire's way of working, which involves adopting a client-centred approach and collaborating with multiple agencies and partners. The goal is to achieve meaningful and sustainable individual rehabilitation and recovery outcomes.
- Maintain good relationships and effective communication with service users, colleagues, families, carers, Courts, Police, Probation, and community partners to provide a professional and consistent service.
- Work holistically with service users to meet their needs, including areas such as safeguarding, housing, criminal justice, and physical and mental health. This involves making referrals to appropriate services and collaborating with others.
- Promote individuals' rights by respecting differences, complying with relevant legislation, reporting discriminatory behaviour, and taking appropriate action.
- Share information appropriately with other agencies according to information-sharing protocols in line with Aspire's policies and contractual requirements.
- Respond to the needs of service users with sensitivity, considering factors such as age, culture, race, gender, ethnicity, social class, or disability, and adjusting behaviour to optimise the helping relationship.
- Maintain accurate and confidential records of service user activity, including writing reports and letters, utilising electronic records and available systems.
- Promote workplace health, safety, and security, and contribute to protecting individuals from abuse and harm by recognising signs of risk and participating in safeguarding processes with other agencies.

In addition to the above, the Peer Support Worker will:

- Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability to the changing demands of the new project and partnership approach.
- Work well in a team, fostering a positive and productive work environment.
- Seek personal improvement and stay updated on services, legislation, and best practices.
- Attend and actively participate in team meetings, appraisal meetings, staff development sessions, and reviews, providing progress updates to the line manager as needed.
- Adhere to Aspire's policies and procedures and follow the direction of line management to achieve service level agreements, targets, and outputs effectively and efficiently.
- Fulfil any other reasonable requests from Aspire management.
