**Senior Animal Welfare Officer**

**ABOUT THE ROLE**:
**As a Senior Animal Welfare Officer, you would be leading a team of Animal Welfare Officers (AWOs) in the development, implementation, and monitoring of animal welfare policies, as well as ensuring that all customer and legislative standards are achieved. You can expect the role to involve**:

- Working with the AWOs to assist the site in developing working practices and procedures and ensuring compliance with current legislation.
- To ensure that the slaughterhouse personnel carry out any remedial actions necessary to ensure compliance with the rules laid down in the regulations.
- Ensure that the site meets its WATOK responsibilities and will be fully engaged with the company’s other slaughter sites to drive standards forward.
- Fully support and train AWO’s to allow them to deliver good animal welfare.
- Continually holding certificates of competence for all operations taking place in the slaughterhouse for which they are responsible.
- Developing and delivering training courses for personnel involved in killing and related operations.
- Delivering certificates of competence attesting the passing of an independent final examination consisting of:

- The handling and care of animals before they are restrained.
- The restraint of animals for the purpose of stunning or killing.
- The stunning of animals.
- The assessment of effective stunning.
- The shackling or hoisting of live animals.
- The bleeding of live animals.
- The slaughtering in accordance with religious slaughter requirements, as applicable.
- Keep a record of actions taken to improve animal welfare in the slaughterhouse.
- Responsible for the assessment of personnel carrying out operations.
- Daily, Weekly, Monthly & Quarterly reporting on Welfare Issues.
- Involvement in sites audits both Internal & External - E.G. BRC, Customer Welfare COP’s, RTA, FSA

**ABOUT YOU**:

- L3 Food Hygiene/Food Related Qualification or higher.
- L3 HACCP or higher.
- IOSH Managing Safety.
- L4 Animal Care/Welfare qualification.
- L3 Training Skills and Practices.
- L3 Award in Assessing Competence in the Work Environment.
- L4 Award in Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practice
- Poultry Welfare Officer - Processing training.
- Excellent track record of working in a team; building capability, addressing any issues effectively and in compliance with legislative and company policies & procedures.
- Ability to clearly communicate with all departments, including the site OV’s, agriculture, transport, catching teams and farmers as well as Group Leaders, other customers and auditing bodies.
- Self-motivated and highly resilient.
- Experience of working in poultry slaughterhouses or other abattoir environments ideally.
- A high level of flexibility is required and ability to problem solve in a fast-paced environment with sometimes conflicting needs & wants.
