Overview Of RoleAn opportunity has arisen for a Scientific Assistant to provide support to the Bawden laboratories (3 days per week) and the Rothamsted Insectary (2 days per week), a specialist facility that maintains a range of both indigenous andexotic insect species of agricultural importance and incorporates the Rothamsted insect gene editing laboratories.

The post holder’s role will include the delivery of routine support services for the laboratories associated with the agronomy, aerobiology/plant pathology, bioimaging, genomics, insect survey/genomics, integrated pest management, and weed science research groups/teams located in the Bawden. The main duties will entail, but are not limited to, cleaning of the laboratory areas (sweeping/mopping floors, emptying bins), washing glassware, operating autoclaves, waste disposal, maintaining the service room, and similar such tasks. In addition, the post-holder may occasionally be required to assist with collection of field samples, processing of samples, data entry, plant maintenance, inoculation of plants with fungal pathogens etc. Relevant training will be provided as needed.

The post holder will further provide basic technical and scientific support to assist the running of the insect gene editing laboratories and behaviour rooms, the maintenance of the core insect collections and of transgenic/gene edited insects, in the Rothamsted Insectary. Additionally, the post holder will on occasion be required to help with some of the scientific work in the insect transgenesis/gene editing laboratories.

This is a fixed term full-time appointment for 3 years (with the possibility of extension), attracting a starting salary of £20,048 per annum.
