The Role
Reporting to Prof Edward Meinert, this is an exciting opportunity to undertake research at the intersection of digital health, software engineering, and clinical health research. You will be responsible for contributing to the research activities of Prof Meinert’s lab, which include various funded projects in the fields of mental health and non-communicable diseases, among others. Day-to-day activities will include project management, conducting literature reviews, conducting semi structured interviews, analysing quantitative and qualitative data (with statistical and thematic analyses), and preparing papers for publication. You will be supported and supervised by Prof Meinert and his staff.
Mental illness is the leading cause of disability in the UK with 1 in 4 adults experiencing a mental health problem each year. Despite an NHS annual spend in excess of £14.1Bn in 2021, demand for support significantly outstrips supply. Digital technology can help address this gap, but with tens of thousands of mobile health tools (wellbeing apps, telemedicine services and digital therapeutics) available, selecting those with sufficient evidence base of safety, and effectiveness and identifying the most appropriate for that individual, is a significant challenge. You will contribute to the development and clinical evaluation of digital health interventions designed to support mental health and other health needs. The main aim of our projects is to examine the implementation, engagement, and real-world impact of digital health interventions on behavioural and health outcomes and their potential to help reduce strain on clinical health services.
This is a full time, fixed term post for 12 months.
Key Accountabilities
- Although working under the general guidance of an academic or Principal Investigator, the postholder will contribute ideas, including enhancements to the technical or methodological aspects of their studies, thus providing substantial 'added value'
- Develop and carry out the specified project using appropriate techniques and equipment as outlined in the personal requirements
- Determine appropriate methodologies for research, with advice and support where required
- Begin to write, with appropriate support, proposals for individual research funding or, where funders do not permit this, contribute to the writing of collective bids
- Assess research findings for the need/scope for further investigations
- Contribute to the writing up of their research for publication and dissemination, either through seminar and conference presentations or through publications
- Present research findings, either at conferences or through publications in reputable outlets appropriate to the discipline
- May be involved in the supervision, with guidance, of final year undergraduate research projects and in providing support to postgraduate research students or Research Assistants
- Will need to work with the support staff and, on occasions, with undergraduate and postgraduate students, and interact intellectually with other academic members of the Institute
- May contribute to events celebrating the public engagement of science/social sciences/humanities
- Develop an awareness of University structures, policies and procedures and relevant issues in the higher education, research, social and political environment

- Ability to manage own academic research and project manage activities
