**Job summary**:
This is an exciting opportunity to join a unique team working on national and international environmental epidemiology projects. We explore the health impacts from a wide range of environmental exposures, including chemicals, air pollution and climate change.
The Radiation, Chemical and Environment (RCE) Directorate provides advice, research and services to protect the public from hazards resulting from exposure to environmental hazards and exposures including chemicals and poisons, radiation, and climate change. The Centre also leads for UKHSA on developing surveillance and intelligence on environmental hazards, exposures and related health outcomes.
The post will involve actively supporting and contributing to epidemiology projects including research and surveillance, incident and outbreak management and response, contributing to the production of epidemiology reports and preparing descriptive and analytical epidemiology. The post holder will support research through their contribution to scientific papers and projects as well as through designing study databases and sharing findings at conferences and meetings.
This is a 12 month FTC to cover maternity leave, providing a public health scientist a chance to widen their experience by working on environmental epidemiology projects.
**Location**
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) offers hybrid working - this means that whilst the role will be based in one of our offices, there will be opportunities for an element of working from home. UKHSA have office locations across the UK.
This role will be based at one of our RCE UKHSA offices/locations, mainly Chilton in Oxfordshire, or Leeds, Manchester, London, Cardiff, Bristol, Nottingham and Birmingham, with opportunities for an element of working from home.
The balance between home and workplace working is to be agreed with the line manager, determined primarily by business needs and in line with departmental policy.

**Job description**:
The job holder will be required to carry out the following responsibilities, activities and duties:
- Develop and oversee surveillance systems (where appropriate) and advise on information management and governance issues
- Identify surveillance needs within Environmental Public Health Tracking and UKHSA’s Environmental Public Health Surveillance System
- contribute to scientific papers on public health surveillance, clusters, outbreaks and environmental public health
- Oversee the information and data management to support a cluster or outbreak or epidemiological investigation
- Provide expert advice on information governance aspects of information management and response
- Evaluate existing surveillance systems through audit
- Use common statistical/database/mapping/web tools such as Stata, R, ArcGIS, network analysis, SQL, SharePoint etc. in routine reports, surveillance activities and the development of solutions
- Undertake complex analytical and programming tasks using common and specialist software packages to support data extractions, analysis and validation
- Present internally and externally to partners on lead area / specialty
- Build and maintain effective relationships with key stakeholders and partners
- Be responsible for the quality of data collected, stored and extracted and transferred

**Person specification**:
**Essential**
- Educated to degree level in information management / science, public health or equivalent experience
- Higher qualification in information management / science, public health, epidemiology or equivalent experience
- Relevant experience of information and data management
- Knowledge and understanding of information governance issues in relation to data collection, storage and sharing and research. Awareness of data protection and confidentiality requirements
- Experience of identifying needs or gaps in data or information
- Ability to analyse and interpret complex data
- Expert skills and knowledge of both common and specialist statistical/database/mappi
