Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine

Clinical responsibilities The care of critically ill patients in accordance with the proposed weekly activities. This may include co-ordination of care for patients, including children, presenting to Homerton Hospital who need transfer to other institutions for continuing care. The training and supervision of junior doctors in the provision of intensive care. On-call commitment will be solely at the Homerton University Hospital NHS Trust, on a 1 in 8 basis with prospective cover.

The successful applicant will be part of a team comprising of 8 Intensive Care consultants, with on-call commitments for Intensive Care alone. There will be 10 planned activities (PAs) per week, of which 8 will be direct clinical care (this is negotiable for those wishing to be considered for LTFT employment. The successful applicant will also be expected to play an active part in the professional supervision, training and management of trainee medical staff. The on-call commitment will be 1 in 8 for Intensive Care, covering Homerton Hospital only the on-call nights would not necessarily fall on a set day.

The rota is set out in blocks of days to ensure as much continuity of care as possible. Nights are not resident (except in exceptional circumstances or if you are unable to reach the hospital within 30 minutes of being contacted) During the on call weekend you are expected to be on site during the hours of 0830-1800. For those wishing to work full time purely in ITU, the 0900-1800 sessions will make up a larger proportion of the clinical commitment than for those working LTFT or in a second speciality. Flexibility of these sessions will ensure that those working in a second speciality will not work above 10 PAs per week when annualised.

**In addition, the post holder will be expected to**: Contribute to the provision of a comprehensive and efficient Intensive Care Medicine service. Provide evidence-based care when appropriate. Have regard at all times to the clinical and quality standards set out in the Patients Charter and the local purchasers contracts. Participate fully in the management of the Department.
