JOB PURPOSE: Assist in the operation and maintenance of the MBA’s research vessels.

ACCOUNTABILITY:

Essential experience/skills/qualifications:

- Minimum 2 years’ experience working on commercial vessels (i.e small workboats or fishing vessels) leading deck operations
- Knowledge of Regulations and Safe Working Practices
- Current STCW 95 Personal Survival Techniques, Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting and First Aid qualifications
- A valid ENG1 or ML5 Medical Certificate
- Demonstrable knowledge and experience of diesel engine maintenance
- Full UK driving license
- Strong communication skills, written and verbal
- Experience of working successfully as part of a multi-disciplinary team
- Ability to problem solve and able to adapt to ever changing tasks
- Have a good attention to detail
- Capable of working under pressure
- Self-motivated with flexibility to work occasional unsocial hours

Desirable experience/skills/qualifications:

- Commercially endorsed Skippers tickets
- Commercial boat handling experience on either a workboat or fishing vessel
- MCA Approved Engine Course part 1 qualification
- Experience of maintaining fishing gear (trawls, pots and longlines)
- Understanding of LOLER and COSHH Regulations
- Interest in marine science/biology.
- Desire to work in a marine research environment within a multi-disciplinary team

Key responsibilities and skills
- Perform all crew related duties/tasks associated with safe operation of The MBA’s Research

Vessels
- Take the lead on deck operations ensuring safety on deck for researchers and visitors
- Ensuring knowledge of Regulations and Safe Working Practices
- Ensure safe deployment and recovery of survey gear
- Be competent in safe operation of deck winches
- Assist with safe deployment and recovery of divers
- Assist in the mobilisation and demobilisation of the vessels on survey days
- Have a thorough understanding of all working deck machinery
- Adhere to MBA’s Health and Safety protocols inc. Vessels’ Safety Management System
- Assist Skipper with maintenance of engines, electronic, and hydraulic and black water systems on both vessels (where appropriate)
- Understand start-up and shut-down procedures of both vessels
- Know the function of MBA Sepia’s engine room and its machinery
- Watch keeping duties
- Maintain a clean and tidy work platform throughout the wheelhouse, galley, heads, decks, holds and off-site stores
- Maintenance of survey equipment (trawls, pots, grabs, nets etc.)
- Contribute to equipment, COSHH and LOLER inventories
- Undertake ad hoc tasks identified as being within the job holder’s capabilities

**Salary**: £12.96-£14.10 per hour

Schedule:

- Monday to Friday

Ability to commute/relocate:

- Plymouth: reliably commute or plan to relocate before starting work (required)
