The Royal Cornwall Yacht Club is looking for a part-time Boatman/Bosun to drive the Club launch for the summer season (1st April to 31st October), and to cover other days by arrangement from time to time.

Ideally applicants will have excellent boat-handling qualifications and experience, boat maintenance ability, good interpersonal skills, a flexible approach to working times and requirements and a willingness to act as part of a team as well as on their own initiative.

**Overview**

The Boatman/Bosun provides a key service to Members at RCYC, transporting them to and from their boats, maintaining the Club launch, monitoring/reporting on the state of the RIBs and ensuring they are seaworthy, tidy and ready for use to suit the sailing programme.

The Boatman/Bosun is also responsible for always keeping the grounds and surroundings of the Club tidy/presentable.

**Detailed responsibilities**
-          to run the launch in an effective way, delivering and collecting Members to and from their boats, recording use as advised by Rear Commodore (Sailing) and to call on visiting yachts on swinging moorings;
-          to ensure the launch is kept adequately fuelled from the Fuel Pontoon at Falmouth Haven;
-          to keep all Club boats and their equipment in good order, undertaking basic maintenance and reporting more significant work that may be required;
-          to maintain all mooring gear in good and working condition;
-          to keep the bosuns’ shed tidy and well-ordered;
-          to ensure the slipway and steps are pressure washed sufficiently often to maintain it safe to use;
-          to log the engine operation hours, and undertake the daily and weekly maintenance schedules;
-          to operate the Club launch in such a way as to maximise its fuel efficiency and working life;
-          to maintain the Club grounds to a high standard of cleanliness, removing litter, weeds, cutting the lawn etc; and
-          to carry out miscellaneous maintenance work as requested
- to help members with any boats related tasks as & when requested.

**Health and Safety**

The Boatman/Bosun will comply with all health and safety legislation and policy at all times.  In particular, they will wear a life-jacket at all times when afloat, observe maximum carrying capacity for any vessel they are using, ensure the VHF radio is kept charged and monitored, and be aware of all risks associated with the role. 
The Boatman/Bosun will ensure s/he is aware of and comply with the contents of the Launch Operating Manual, available in the office and in the Bosuns’ Shed.
The Boatman/Bosun will report to the Vice Commodore any health and safety issues that arise.

**Person Specification**

**Qualifications and Experience**
- Powerboat Level 2 or equivalent boat-handling qualification
- First Aid Certificate
- VHF Licence
- Truro Boatman’s Licence
- SRC Radio Licence

(any appointment will be conditional on these being held or, in the case of the last two, gained prior to contract when the costs will be refunded by RCYC)
- Knowledge of Falmouth Harbour and its regulations
- Proven boat-handling experience
- Boat maintenance skills and experience
