I am a 43yo disabled man with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. I employ a team of PAs to support me 24/7 living independently at home, and going out and about professionally and socially.

I'm looking for a Team Leader/PA manager to head up my PA team. This role will involve 2 direct personal care shifts per week, as well as the coordination of the rota, recruitment, supervision, learning and development of the PA team. Personal care shifts will include occasional weekends and you can choose either 8 AM to 6 PM or 9 AM to 10 PM. Management tasks can be carried out as needed and will require some flexibility e.g. some training will be done between 6pm-9pm.

In total you will be expected to work 35 hours per week and may be required to pick up occasional paid overtime. Exact shifts & hours can be discussed as there is some flexibility.

I'm looking for someone to start as soon as possible but am happy to wait for the right person if they need to give notice to a current employer.

About me

I have severe muscle weakness in all areas which restricts all movement, requiring the use of a ventilator and electric wheelchair. I require assistance with all aspects of personal care, getting out socially and at-work support. You must be OK with cats (I have two), and be comfortable supporting me as a gay man occasionally dating. I enjoy gaming, movies, cooking and travelling and I am partial to a cocktail or two. I work part-time for a housing association, lobbying for more accessible housing.

**What I'm looking for**

My care routine and equipment is unique to me so I don't mind whether you have specific care experience. Some of my best assistants have never worked in care before. However, as this is a leadership role I am looking for someone with the following qualities:

- 5 years experience of managing people (in any sector)
- Excellent communication skills and able to be professional and respectful even when dealing with difficult colleagues
- Able to be friendly, pleasant and relaxed and understands the importance of creating a safe and enjoyable workplace culture that is not unnecessarily bureaucratic
- Proactive, reflective and committed to continuous improvement in themselves and others. Your training and development will be supported.
- Reliable and punctual with the flexibility to work a range of shifts when needed (including occasional waking night shifts in an emergency)

You will be able to recognise the responsibility of your role in maintaining my well-being without becoming overwhelmed by it. The personal care element of the job will feel intense at first but once you learn the routine it becomes much easier. You will be given extensive training, but it is important that you can be comfortable with the responsibility of supporting someone on life support, occasionally on a 1-to-1 basis. You will be comfortable taking direction from me on how to provide my care.

My PAs have supported me to get married (and divorced but that's a different matter), travel around the world and to have fun staycations at home. My PAs are a vital part of my life. In this role you will make a meaningful difference to my life, relieving the stress of managing a care team and covering shifts.

Remuneration

Pay is £30,000-£35,000 per year depending on experience and suitability for the job, which will be assessed at interview. You will be entitled to holiday pay and will be issued with employment contracts. All applicants must be willing to undertake an Enhanced DBS check and provide references.

**MAIN DUTIES**:

- Running introductory and refresher training sessions for existing PAs
- Ensuring all training resources are up-to-date and fit for purpose
- Sourcing and coordinating external training sessions for existing PAs
- Managing the PA rota (with my input)
- Monitoring equipment and keeping everything stocked and in working order
- Monitoring PA performance and identifying areas for further development
- Planning and coordinating trips and holidays away from home, ensuring PAs are supported to work outside the home
- Supervision and check-ins with the PA team
- Coaching and mentoring of junior staff
- Nutrition and meal planning

**During a care shift your duties will include**:
Supporting me to go out socially
Managing my ventilator and ensuring it is connected and functionally correctly at all times
Monitoring my health and wellbeing throughout the shift
Getting me washed, dressed and ready in the morning
Getting me undressed and ready for bed in the evenings

Assisting me with toileting
Assisting me with dental care, skin and nail care, including monitoring any problem areas
Preparing food and drink as required and helping to manage my diet plan.
Assisting me with eating at mealtimes.
Supporting me to access technology e.g. computers, TV, Ipad & phone
Support me with pet care for my cats - including fe
