Herdsman/woman

Dairy Herdsperson required for a rotationally grazed 280 cow herd in East Ayrshire. We are currently looking for someone who can turn their hand to all aspects of farming, passionate about cows and passionate about grazing. In exchange we offer a competitive salary, regular time off, a 45-hour work week and opportunities for learning and skill development.

The herd is rotationally grazed for as many months as possible (6-7 months) and housed for the remainder of the time. The herd is primarily made up of British Friesian cows, with some Jerseys and crosses. The cows are milked through a 14-point swing over herringbone parlour. The herd operates a split block calving system with 160 cows calving in the spring and 120 calving in the autumn. The business also has a second herd of 100 cows at another steading 10 miles from the main farm, that calve all year round which you may occasionally be required to work at.

The farm is situated within 10 minutes of the towns of Cumnock and new Cumnock and less than a hour from Glasgow. Accommodation is not provided with this role but assistance to find accommodation can be provided if relocating.

Alternate weekends will be required; however, two weekdays can be taken off in the week where the weekend is worked to ensure a healthy work-life balance. In the above shift pattern illustration these are shown as Thursday and Friday but this can be adjusted to suit the applicant. A mixture of early and later starts would be required. The morning milking starts at 5.30am. If starting at 5.30 you would be able to finish at 3.30pm, alternatively if starting at 7am you would finish at 5.30pm. This gives a work pattern of 9 hours worked per day per day, 5 days per week, with a 1-hour lunch break and two paid tea breaks each day. Occasionally these hours may be exceeded at seasonally busy times such as silage and calving, in which case additional hours would be paid at an overtime rate.
