We are looking for a suitable person to join our Torbay Hospital Switchboard team on a part-time basis working approximately 18.5 hours per week The successful applicant will work within a team supporting a 2 week rota, incorporating early, late, night and day shifts and including weekends and Bank Holidays.

The department is the first point of contact for both internal and external customers, providing a number of critical functions, including Directory Services, Paging, Alarm Management, Cardiac Arrest and other ‘Crash Call’ emergency services.

As such we are looking for a person with excellent interpersonal skills and a calm, positive attitude. Switchboard experience would be an advantage but not necessary.

It is important that the post holder will be able to multi-task and work under pressure as well as deal with any emergency situations as they arise.

The main duties of this role include answering all calls, operating the switchboard, dealing with cardiac arrest calls and other emergency situations, whilst also providing high standards of customer service to both internal and external agencies.

Applicants need to be flexible, adaptable and well organised with good time management skills.

The Switchboard is based at Torbay Hospital and operates a 24x7x365 service. It acts as the first point of contact for many interactions with the Trust and thus quality of service is of the utmost importance. The Switchboard also co-ordinate communications concerning critical events including major incidents, medical emergencies, alarms etc. so calmness under pressure and attention to detail are paramount.

There are around 15 members of staff in Switchboard who work a variety of day, evening and night shifts to provide 24-hour coverage. Between 2 and 4 staff work in the Switchboard at all times. We provide telephony services to our local community hospitals in addition to Torbay hospital, and also provide out-of-hours cover for certain other services (e.g. Facilities Management helpdesk and Car Parking intercom).

The Switchboard is a self-contained office located centrally within Torbay Hospital. There are facilities for basic food and beverage preparation and the hospital’s retail/catering outlets are available nearby during normal hours.
