In August 2023, the current Faculty of Engineering and Informatics will become the Faculty of Engineering and Digital Technologies and undergo a reshaping of the academic disciplines, from the six current Departments (Biomedical and Electronics Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil and Structural Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical and Energy Systems Engineering, Media Design and Technology) to three larger Schools>. The rationale is to meet the growing challenges of contemporary interdisciplinary opportunities and to deliver the strategic growth agenda of the University. These Schools are the School of Engineering, the School of Built Environment, Architecture and Creative Industries, and the School of Computer Science, AI and Electronics.

The role of Head of the School of Computer Science, AI and Electronics is an exciting opportunity to lead the development of a new interdisciplinary academic grouping, at a time when the Faculty is looking to grow its student education and research and innovation activities, to deliver the overall strategy of the University and meet the employment and technology needs of external partners linked to its disciplines.

The Head of School is responsible to the Dean of the Faculty for the strategic leadership and management of the School and its staff. The University is fundamentally led by its values of excellence, inclusion, innovation and trust and the role holder is required to champion and nurture this culture, and the associated qualities, practices and behaviours. The Head will provide leadership around all aspects of the academic provision, playing a key role in supporting the Faculty in identifying and delivering Faculty priorities designed to deliver the University strategy, working closely with the Dean, the Associate Deans, and other members of the Faculty Management Committee.

In normal circumstances after a 3-year appointment as Head of School the post holder will revert to a normal academic position commensurate with their grade. Extension of the headship beyond 3 years is possible and will be considered as appropriate. The Head is also expected to participate in student education and to pursue research and knowledge exchange in their area of interest in the School and Faculty. The role attracts an addititional £7.5k per annum on top of the current substantive academic position salary of the role holder.
