Domestic Abuse Support Worker

**Responsibilities**
- To provide safety advice, practical and emotional support to female victims of domestic violence/abuse on an appointment basis, face to face or by telephone.
- Complete initial and ongoing holistic, needs and risk assessments and make safe decisions in the interests of all survivors of domestic abuse.
- To provide advice, information and advocacy for women on a wide range of issues such as safety, safeguarding, legal remedies, welfare benefits, health care, housing etc.
- To assist women and their children to achieve and maintain safety, access safe temporary accommodation or re-settle successfully into the community, developing support networks within the community specific to their needs.
- Empower service users to identify and achieve their goals/positive outcomes.
- To assist women to develop social support networks.
- Where appropriate, to develop initiatives for women such as self-help support groups, assertiveness training, advice sessions etc.
- To deliver specific group programs on a rolling basis.
- To maintain and record accurate case files and support plans in agreement with client. Maintain accurate records regarding all service users in NWA’s client case

Management system following NWA ISP (Individual Support Plan) Policy.
- To work in partnership and advocate for women with external agencies, ensuring they receive the best possible service from both the civil and criminal justice systems.
- Establish and maintain good working relationships with Local Authorities, Children's Social Care and any other relevant voluntary and statutory agency.
- To facilitate the MARAC process.
- To work both Multi Agency and Intra Agency in order for clients to achieve their desired outcomes.
- Ensure that the health, wellbeing and rights of women and children are promoted throughout service delivery.
- To work in accordance with all Newcastle Women’s Aid’s policies, procedures and practices.
- To carry out any other duties as may be reasonably required within the level of responsibility of the post.
- To collate data relevant to monitoring.

**Additional Responsibilities**
- To participate in team meetings and Board of Trustee meetings as required.
- To maintain an allocated caseload under the direction of the Manager.
- To maintain accurate records, statistics, filing systems etc. and to ensure confidentiality of records and other information.
- To be responsible for own administration procedures, including maintaining the office diary and making appointments.
- To maintain good relationships with local voluntary and statutory agencies and the public.
- To identify individual training needs relevant to the post and to personal development.

**Skills**

Essential:

- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including negotiation skills.
- Good IT skills.
- Good organisational and time management skills.
- Ability to work independently, as part of a team and with partner agencies.
- A flexible and adaptable approach to clients and working environment.
- An empathic, empowering and non-judgemental attitude.
- Ability to effectively work with people regardless of their ethnic, cultural, social backgrounds, their gender, age, religious belief, disability, and sexual orientation.
- Ability to communicate with, and relate to, women from all backgrounds.
- An understanding of monitoring and reporting, and the importance of accurate and effective case notes.
- A good understanding of confidentiality and professional boundaries.
- A commitment to safeguarding adults and children and working within safeguarding procedures.
- A commitment to the rights of women and children.
- Work within the organisations Policies and Procedures.

**Experience and Knowledge**

Essential:

- Minimum 1 year paid or unpaid social welfare experience in a responsible role.
- Experience of working in the Womens sector or with people with complex needs.
- Knowledge of domestic abuse, its impact and remedies.
- Knowledge of local support systems and how to access.

Desirable:

- IDVA or DAPA qualification.
- Housing-related knowledge and understanding.
- Understanding of the needs of children exposed to trauma.
- Knowledge of welfare benefits.
- Group work experience.
- Knowledge of the effects of childhood sexual, physical
