This is an exciting opportunity to join one of the largest
microbiology departments in England as an AA grade
Autoclave and Stores Medical Laboratory Assistant. The
Manchester Medical Microbiology Partnership (MMMP) is a
collaboration between UKHSA and Manchester University
NHS Foundation Trust.

The microbiology partnership provides comprehensive
routine services and specialist services to a wide range of
hospitals across the North West and beyond and also
assists in any UKHSA co-ordinated responses or activity of a
national/international nature, e.g. Bioterrorism incident or
major disease e.g enteric outbreaks, COVID19, SARS.

The department employs around 130 staff and has a
workload of approximately 1.2 million specimens covering
major clinical specialties including respiratory medicine,
transplantation, burns, renal medicine, urology & paediatrics.
The department embraces all aspects of a modern clinical
bacteriology service combining traditional methodologies with
laboratory automation.

The scope of this role is to assist in delivering an efficient
microbiology laboratory service by monitoring and
maintaining departmental stores and safe disposal of waste
material.

The job holder will be required to work within a rotational shift
pattern, which may include shifts throughout a 24 hours a day/7days per week period, to meet the service needs of the
department.

**Your main duties would include**:

- Wash-up/sterilisation: useofequipmentincluding

autoclavesandovens,collectionanddisposalof
discardmaterial/wash-upandpreparationof
glassware etc
- Autoclaving of waste material and patient samples

(involves moderate lifting).
- Disposal of tissue and patient samples in accordance

with relevant guidelines.
- Monitor and maintain appropriate stock levels, receipt

of deliveries and preparation of orders.
- Responsible for monitoring and maintain appropriate

stocklevelsofpre-pouredcultureplatesand
preparation of weekly media orders for external media
suppliers.
- Work in a safe manner in accordance with Laboratory

Health and Safety policies and procedures.
- Dealing with visitors and other departmental deliveries.
- Cleaning and disinfection of equipment and laboratory

areas.
- Monitoring and routine maintenance of equipment

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

You would provide clerical duties, including use of computers,
and telephone enquiries.
Demonstrating systems and department requirements to new
starters.
YouwouldparticipateinQualityAssuranceandQuality
Control activities and assist the department in maintaining UKAS accreditation. The postholder would participate in audit
processes, drug trials, research projects as required in
preparation of reagents and media supplies.
Job Holder is expected to occasionally work under remote
supervision of a Registered Biomedical Scientist following
defined SOP/protocols and would be expected to refer non
routine issues to their supervisor.

as may reasonably be required by your line manager.
