An exciting opportunity has arisen for a therapy assistant to join our Speech and Language Therapy team at Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals NHS Trust.

Patients benefit from high quality care, from highly motivated and skilled staff throughout the stroke pathway. Hyper acute and acute stroke care and inpatient stroke rehabilitation are provided at Saint Peter's Hospital. We also provide a service to the Bradley Neuro-rehabilitation Unit based in Woking and two Early Supported Discharge Teams for Stroke, one based at Ashford Hospital and one based at Milford Hospital. The Therapy Manager for Stroke and Neuro services manages all the stroke/neuro therapy teams at Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals, which has provided continuity, consistency and opportunities for joined up working, rotations, sharing of best practice and training.

We are looking for someone who will relish the opportunity to work with Stroke patients who have communication and swallowing disorders and to be part of the multi disciplinary team

Part time and Flexible working requests will be considered

To assist the Stroke/ Neuro Speech and Language Therapy Team on HASU, ASU and Rehab wards, offering a range of therapy techniques and strategies under the guidance and supervision of qualified Speech and Language therapists to facilitate patients reaching their optimum communication and swallowing abilities.

To support the therapy team in ensuring safe and timely discharges from hospital.

The Trust is moving towards 7 day working and this post will be expected to participate in providing a seven day service if the service requires.

There is an expectation that the post holder will be required to travel between sites for meetings/training as necessary and to support other teams if required.

Main duties and responsibilities of the post

To be part of the ward therapy team and implement specific treatment programmes or interventions delegated to them by qualified therapy staff.

To manage own clinical caseload.

To work in close liaison with the qualified staff on the ward to assist them with their duties, depending on profession

To carry out rehabilitation as determined by patients’ needs.

The post holder will be dealing with a varied caseload of patients.

To undertake non-clinical duties related to the treatment and management of patients, photocopying, filing, ordering/delivering equipment, recording patient contacts on Trust IT system, arranging follow up appointments etc.

Clinical

To work in collaboration with other team members to provide Speech and Language therapy for patients within the speciality, assisting in the implementation of programmes to meet individual swallowing and communication needs.

To provide therapeutic intervention for individual patients to improve swallow and communication function.

To plan, facilitate and evaluate groups on the wards, as appropriate to the needs, with support from qualified therapy staff.

To advise on therapy strategies and plans.

To plan treatment programmes, adapting and progressing the rehabilitation of patients within the guidelines set by the assessing therapists. This will include modifying treatments to take account of changes in the patient’s physical and mental state.

To work with patients individually or in groups as directed by qualified therapists.

To work in conjunction with patients and carers on specific issues, as directed by the therapy staff, and to deal with their concerns as they arise.
