Job Description and Person Specification

Reporting to: Managing Director

Hours: 4 days per week (30 hours)

**Salary**: £24,000 PA (£28,860 FTE)

Location: Southall

Please note: The post-holder will be required to undergo an extended CRB check for working with children and vulnerable adults.

About ESDEG:
Education & Skills Development Group (ESDEG) was established in 2005 by a group of mainly education academics to respond to the low attainment of refugee and minority children in Ealing schools. ESDEG has a proven track record in working with children, families and school at local level. For the last 15 years we have been running supplementary classes, mentoring and youth work working in partnership with local schools.

We have recently secured funding from Esmée Fairbairn Foundation to deliver very important project supporting local BEME families with SEND children and those with learning disability. We need to recruit a team of SEND Coordinator, learning mentor and counsellor to deliver our SEND service aimed to transform the lives of families and their children for the better.

Main Purpose of the role:

- Provide advice, information and support to families from marginalised communities in the London Borough of Ealing who have a child up to the age of 25 with a Special Educational Needs or Disability (SEND)
- Empower families from marginalised communities to tackle isolation and encourage social and financial inclusion
- Work in partnership with statutory and voluntary services in Ealing in order to improve services to families and increase the take up of services and entitlements
- Manage all aspects of the S.E.N.D. support service including financial, administrative and data management of the project

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

- _Provide advice, information and support:_
- Provide advice, and information via various channels, particularly around benefits, and financial issues to families who have a child with a disability
- Offer one-to-one support to families via different methods, including home visits, letter-writing, form-filling and attending statutory meetings with families
- Liaise with children and their families and contacts to help identify and meet needs
- _Empower families from marginalised communities to tackle isolation_
- Promote equal opportunities and ensure the project provides a safe, welcoming environment
- Facilitate translation and interpreting support for families where needed
- Provide support specifically tailored to families from the diverse communities living in the London Boroughs of Ealing, Hounslow and Hillingdon
- To advocate needs of individuals and communities on behalf of children and families to decision makers
- _Work in partnership with statutory and voluntary services_
- Link families with other support agencies and services as appropriate
- Work with statutory and voluntary sector partners to improve interagency working; contribute towards the development of holistic and seamless services for children and families and contribute to relevant meetings and forums
- Work with stakeholders to improve procedures for inter-agency referral
- Represent the project and ESDEG at relevant external meetings and forums run by partner organisations in all sectors
- _Project Management_
- Develop and operate an efficient and appropriate administrative system for managing the project, including referral, assessment, case-recording, personal data and attendance monitoring
- Record appropriate impact data to facilitate tracking of project progress and feedback regularly to the manager and provide reports to funders
- Publicise the project through diverse channels including social media and written and spoken word information
- Develop an effective team of volunteers to support the project including support for recruitment and training of volunteers
- Manage the finances of the project and keep appropriate financial records
- Ensure the project, activities and equipment comply with ESDEG policies and procedures and relevant legislation
- To undertake professional development including regular supervision and training as agreed with the manager
- To perform any other related duties commensurate with the general level of responsibility of the post and the requirements of funders

Person Specification

**Key experience, knowledge, skills & values**:
Experience
- Relevant qualification or equivalent experience in a related field such as social work, teaching, counselling or youth work
- Work with disabled children and their families
- Partnership working with voluntary and statutory stakeholders

**Skills**:

- Excellent verbal and written communication
- Microsoft office and other basic IT literacy
- Self-motivation, flexibility and the ability to use initiative
- Ability to speak Somali language is desirable but not necessary

Knowledge
- The key challenges facing disabled children and their families
- Understanding of the specific needs
