Support Worker

Haddington, United Kingdom Enable Scotland Full time

**MIDLOTHIAN: BILSTON (with some travel to Stockbridge)**

**17.5 HOURS PER WEEK (**Typically 2 or 3 shifts of 7 hours)**

Let us introduce you to Hazel:
Hazel is in her 20s and is a young woman with autism and a learning disability.
Hazel is bright, fun and full of life. Her personality and smile are infectious. It takes time to get to know her and to build up a relationship. She is very complex and despite her anxieties, she is determined and brave. She currently lives at home with her family.

"Getting the right assistance when I need it will allow me to lead my life as independently as possible, the way I want to whilst giving me guidance and support to make safe decisions. Sometimes I find it hard to communicate what I need and therefore it is vital that a support worker is observant, patient and has good communication and listening skills so they can pick up on my subtle cues, which indicate how I am feeling. I need someone who will encourage me to use my words but also give me time to process requests as I can easily become overwhelmed. Being actively involved in planning my day to day activities and outings help me."
"I enjoy, trips out and socialising. I need someone to keep me safe when out and about. I enjoy outings to the coast/ beach, being active, walking and music. I like to be on the periphery of some activities. I like visiting local attractions, going into Edinburgh on the bus, and further afield (pubs, cinema, shopping for pleasure, concerts, theatre, museums, galleries, events). I would like to experience new things which will enrich my life. I am quite attached to my Ipad. It helps me relax but too much time on it isn’t good for me either."
"Like most people, my day varies so it is difficult to list every task that is expected of a Support Worker. The post holder will therefore need to be able to work on their own initiative whilst at the same time be respectful of my own and my parents’ wishes."
The team requires self-motivated individuals who are trustworthy and reliable, with lots of energy and a good sense of humour.
Personal Assistants have the most important role within ENABLE Scotland by making a positive difference every day to the lives of the people we support. No two days are the same for our Personal Assistants but what we can guarantee is that you will be supporting someone with a learning disability to achieve their goals and outcomes - whatever they may be

Each person we support has different support needs, so your role may include assisting them with various aspects of personal care, moving and handling or positive behavioural support whilst expanding their social networks and connections.

ENABLE Scotland creates a bespoke team around every individual we support, and our team of Personal Assistants work collaboratively to ensure the safety, wellbeing and aspirations of the people we support are met.

The Best in _You_ Brings Out the Best in _Me_

The people we support have many varied interests and hobbies and have many of the same dreams and aspirations as we do; they just too often do not get the opportunity to experience these same opportunities. A career with ENABLE Scotland is as rewarding as it is diverse, Personal Assistants at _their_ **best** have the potential to truly bring out _the_ **best** in the people we support.

ENABLE Scotland needs **_you_** and **_your_** values to help us create an equal society for every person who has a learning disability.

You don’t need experience in care to start your career with ENABLE Scotland. We recruit people based on their values and transferrable skills. Wherever your journey has taken you up until now, join us, and together we will forge a new path in what could potentially be the most rewarding role you have ever had

ENABLE Scotland is a dynamic and vibrant organisation dedicated to improving the lives of people with learning disabilities and we are looking for motivated and driven individuals to join us in ensuring they have the same opportunities as everyone else.

We believe in developing all our staff and we provide an extensive learning programme together with in-house career development opportunities. These include, but are not limited to:

- Person Centred approaches, planning and thinking
