Ashford, United Kingdom East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust Full time

The Neonatal services sit within the Children’s care group within the Trust. The Neonatal intensive care unit at the William Harvey is one of 4 level 3 units within the South East Coast Operational Delivery Network (SEC ODN). There are 25 cots in total (7 NICU, 4 HDU and 14 SCBU cots) and a newly developed neonatal outreach service to help facilitate earlier hospital discharge support for families. Referrals for the neonatal care are from within the Trust, within the network and sometimes out the network. The Neonatal Unit provides full medical intensive care services and including therapeutic hypothermia, nitric oxide and management of extremely preterm infants. Neonatal surgical and cardiac patients are transferred to the neonatal unit at The Evelina Children’s Hospital. Transitional care is provided on Folkestone Ward. We have a fetal medicine department with input from a visiting Fetal Medicine Specialist from St Thomas’s Hospital in London (Dr Caroline Knight). There is an active neonatal research programme incorporating NIHR portfolio studies and local research collaborations with the University of Kent. Regular neonatal simulation training is conducted and we have access to a simulation unit within the hospital. We have a weekly ATAIN, fetal medicine, safeguarding and microbiology meetings and have some of the lowest ATAIN rates in the UK (3-4%).

**Clinical**: We are looking to appoint a substantive consultant neonatologist to join our existing team in our Level 3 Neonatal Unit as a 6thfull time consultant. Currently there are 5 full time substantive consultants and 1 consultant at a locum position. Our ambition is to work towards an 8-person consultant rota to help enable resident consultant cover for 10 hours on weekdays and minimum on-site cover from 9am-2pm on weekends so that we can work toward compliance with BAPM senior medical staffing recommendations and neonatal GIRFT recommendations. Sub speciality interests complimenting those of the existing consultants would be desirable (e.g. education, respiratory, neonatal neurology and development). There are sessions when not on clinical service in which the post holder may pursue an area of interest within neonatology to complement the existing interests. Links to an academic neonatal unit are encouraged.

This is a 10 PA post and the post holder will share the clinical duties with the other neonatal consultants. A consultant of the week system in operation with 1-week block of service. The other consultant of the week has no duties off site. It is anticipated that about 8.5 weeks/year will be clinical as consultant of the week for the intensive care nursery and a similar number covering HDU/SC/TC and the post-natal ward. Additional PA’s may be available depending on the needs of the service.
