**Job Title**: College Medical Assistant

**Location**:Across the Trust (based at Ivybridge Community College currently)

**Grade**: Devon Legacy Pay Scales, Grade D, SCP 8-12

**Hours**: 32.5 hours a week, 39 weeks per year

**Reports to**:Designated Safeguarding Lead

(with links to Head of Enrichment and Sports Academy and College Medical Coordinator)

**Responsible for**: Not applicable

**Key relationships**: Senior Leadership Team, Medical Coordinator, Operations Manager, and whole student body

**Job Purpose**

The job holder will provide first aid to students, staff and visitors at Ivybridge Community College and oversee the care of students and others who are unwell or injured, deciding on the appropriate course of action.

They will ensure that students with ongoing medical needs are supported in College in line with their Individual Health Care Plans, administer approved medication to students and maintain records and reports, including those for statutory requirements.

Other administrative duties in support of the wider College.

**Duties and Responsibilities**

**Main Duties**
- Administer first aid to students, staff and visitors within the competencies of the first aid certification held by the post holder.
- Attend emergency medical incidents wherever they occur in the College and undertake actions necessary to stabilise and assist the casualty, which may include calling the emergency services.
- Contact parent/carers following students visiting the Medical Room to ensure the appropriate action has been taken to medically support the students when they leave the Medical Room.
- Have a clear understanding on how to access student information on specific medical conditions and Health Care Plans.
- Responsibility for dealing with day-to-day individual health needs, including the administering of medication.
- Undertaking health assessments of students/staff who become unwell or injured during the College day and responding accordingly.
- Supporting and treating students with chronic/complex illnesses (including Diabetes, Asthma, Epilepsy etc), working with parents/carers, appropriate College staff and healthcare professionals to support the provision of individualised Health Care Plans.
- Supervise diabetics when they check their blood sugar levels.
- Administer prescription drugs as necessary, ensuring correct permissions from the parent/carer.
- Maintain confidentiality of information acquired while undertaking duties for the College.
- To maintain and restock all first aid boxes and medical supplies across the College. Including the provision of first aid kits for College trips.
- To liaise with parents/hospital/health service/College over student health care where necessary.
- Responsible for reporting any student safeguarding concerns to the relevant staff members.
- Assist with the provision of general care and welfare to students and to be mindful of the need to maintain a safe environment at all times.
- Working with staff leading College trips to ensure that leaders are aware and proficient in dealing with any student with medical needs.
- Willingness to undertake moving and handling of students.
- Work with other first aiders within the College site to share information and resources.
- Act as a listening ear for all students and engage students to share wellbeing concerns. Liaise with SEND Team and Pastoral Team to ensure an interconnected service for student wellbeing needs.
- Gather information on local health services/agencies and ensure relevant information is available for students to increase awareness on wellbeing issues and sources of support.

**Administration responsibilities**
- Management of the accident/medical event log and responsible for recording and maintaining medical and health and safety records for individual students, staff and visitors using computer systems.
- Monitor and maintain an electronic register of students who have medicines in College and ensure a consent form is fully completed in each case. Supervise the taking of these at the appropriate time, checking expiry date/dosages and make sure they are kept securely at all times.
- Maintain an efficient filing system of accurate patient records and medicines stored onsite - both manually and electronically.
- Ensure appropriate data/information is input to SIMS and that computer data is handled in a strictly private and confidential manner, according to data protection principles.
- To ensure students are accurately signed out on SIMS when they are sent home via the Medical Room.

**Medical Room responsibilities**
- To liaise with relevant bodies over the disposal of medical waste.
- Ensuring the Medical Room is kept clean and tidy at all times and is well stocked with medical consumables.
- Carry out half termly stock checks of all medical supplies in the Medical Room.
