- Job description- The Starcross Laboratory provides analysis of environmental samples to support the Environment Agency’s regulatory responsibilities using a wide range of analytical techniques.
As a Senior Assistant Scientist in the Starcross Metals Team, you will carry out routine sample analysis and approval of results, to ensure delivery of our analytical services to defined time, cost and quality targets. You will be required to support the Assistant Scientists in the team, monitor and prioritise workload, provide technical training and assist with the assessment of competency of staff in analytical methods.

You will assist with the maintenance of our internal quality systems, including maintaining documentation, monitor Bias/RSD performance of our methods and carry out non-conforming work investigations in line with our ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.
You will actively promote health, safety and wellbeing ensuring provision of safe working practices in line with Environment Agency guidance
- The team- Based at Starcross the team of 13 staff analyse environmental water samples for Metal analytes using a range of different techniques and instrumentation.
Working together with Microbiology, Organic and Inorganic teams, the laboratory analyse and provide results for freshwater, saline and effluent samples for the Environment Agency.
The laboratory is UKAS accredited to EN ISO/IEC 17025.
- Experience/skills required- Ideally you will be educated to degree level or equivalent and have proven experience of working in a Chemistry laboratory accredited to ISO/IEC 17025. You will be able to demonstrate a good understanding of Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) instrumentation and other techniques used in the analysis of Metal Analytes, together with associated quality procedures to ensure validity of results.
You must enjoy working in a busy team environment, often under pressure to achieve results.
You will need to demonstrate the key capabilities; manages self, applies analytical knowledge, develops people, achieves results & communicates effectively
