Job description

We are looking for two motivated individuals to work with farmers, landowners, land managers and organisations in partnerships, with an aim to safeguard, restore and enhance the natural environment by providing technical advice on habitat and species management on our protected sites within Yorkshire and northern Lincolnshire.

Working on our protected sites can be a sensitive and challenging work area and you will be required to work with a range of stakeholders including those undertaking the activities, representative groups, the public, statutory bodies, and Non-Governmental Organisations.

As Lead Adviser working on protected sites, you’ll need to understand the range of views, but ensure activities are evidence-led and sustainable and that the conservation interests of protected sites are maintained and enhanced. This can include convening and engaging user groups and their representatives, liaising with landowners, developing solutions for sustainable activities (e.g. codes of conduct) and regulating activities e.g. through consenting and by-laws.

You need to be a team player, able to work with a range of staff in local and national teams and have the ability to operate as an individual. You will lead projects and develop effective working relationships that can make a real difference in the natural environment.

We are recruiting two Lead Adviser roles, one to focus on initial activities in our upland habitats and another to work on the Humber Estuary where we have a need to build relationships with these sectors. In the uplands we want to secure a safe home for threatened birds such as hen harrier and merlin, plus the many other upland birds that use the landscape for breeding and feeding. On the Humber Estuary we work to ensure that wildfowling practices involving specific species of ducks, geese, and waders are sustainable.

We are seeking individuals with a range of knowledge, skills and experience covering habitat management, species management, agricultural practices, land management, and negotiation to provide comprehensive technical advice on conservation and nature recovery.

**Key tasks/principal activities**
- Work with landowners/land managers and stakeholders to deliver improvements to the condition of habitats and species on Protected Sites.
- Monitor and complete condition assessments of SSSI land and of upland habitats including (but not limited to) blanket bog, upland heath, upland hay meadows, woodland and limestone pavement. Identify threats, adverse condition reasons and measures required to improve site condition.
- Take guidance from colleagues, work strategically, proactively and collaboratively with stakeholders and partners to identify and secure opportunities to deliver gains in SSSI condition
- Engage with internal and external networks relevant to upland and wildfowling sustainable activities, potentially involve building new networks.
- Ensure consistency in approach to casework in consultation with national teams including the complex case unit
