The Thames Estuary 2100 Plan is a trailblazing adaptive management strategy for managing tidal flood risk in London and the Thames Estuary throughout the 21st century.
This is an influential and exciting opportunity to be part of the Next Delivery Vehicle project team to collaboratively design a diverse and inclusive delivery team and programme which will deliver sustainable flood risk management and environmental improvements for the phase2 of TE2100 Plan.
The Principal Environmental and Sustainability Advisor is a key role in the high performing and collaborative team. You’ll assume an Environmental and Sustainability leadership role, advocating for and realising positive environmental and sustainability outcomes. Working with and reporting to the Environment and Sustainability Manager, your outstanding communication, collaboration, influencing and leadership skills will be critical to the team’s success.
You’ll lead and inspire staff across the project, including Environment Agency colleagues and our delivery partners to shift culture. Environmental and sustainability leadership, programme and project delivery, environment, and sustainability assurance in the context of project and programmatic outcome delivery, environmental compliance, and development of, and delivery through, sustainability conformance measures will sit at the heart of your role. You’ll therefore excel in building excellent collaborative working relationships in these fields.
Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment. Full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.
- The team- We are the National Environmental Assessment and Sustainability (NEAS) team, part of Major Project and Programme Delivery. Our friendly, supportive, and inclusive team puts sustainability at the heart of decision-making across our Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management programme. We oversee the effective management of environmental compliance and sustainability conformance across NDV and TEAM2100 programme.
We are comprised of Environmental Project Managers, Landscape and Heritage specialists as well as support and leadership colleagues.
- Experience/skills required
- An environmental/sustainability background, ideally with qualifications and/or experience in an environmental/ sustainability disciplines.
- Membership of a professional environmental institute desired, but not essential.
- Strong communication skills and relationship management with internal/external partners.
- Knowledge in technical areas such as: sustainability, habitats regulations, biodiversity net gain, natural capital, planning, environmental design.
- Coordination of Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA), Strategic Environmental Assessments (SEA) desired, but not essential.
- Programme /Project management skills.
- Experience in mentoring colleagues.
- Understanding of flood and coastal risk asset management.
- Experience in collaborating with others to deliver project and/or programmatic environmental and sustainability opportunities, manage risks and be able to communicate this effectively.
- Strategic thinking, flexibility and adaptability.
- Environmental and Sustainability Assurance.
- Development of, and delivery through, Environmental compliance and sustainability conformance.
- Leadership skills with an ability to influence and improve processes and behaviours.
