Role: Lawyer
Location: Portishead
Pay: £20.70 p/h

Main Responsibilities:
1. Investigate and case-manage high value pre-action and litigated civil claims against the Chief Constable.
2. Provide legal advice and guidance on all civil matters to the Chief Constable identifying legal and reputational risk.
3. To draft pleadings on behalf of the Chief Constable for submission at Court and to supervise the drafting of others.
4. Represent the Chief Constable at Court hearings, Tribunals and within mediation and settlement meetings.
5. To supervise junior staff in the handling of their own case files and in the provision of general advice to officers and staff on a range of legal issues.
6. Assist the Senior Lawyer and SLT in the provision of legal advice and guidance at Strategic level, including national and force projects and policy and critical incidents and Silver Groups.
8. Advise upon and manage cases involving police misconduct, employment law and coronial law.
10. Provide tactical advice and real-time advice on police operations at Silver level.
11. Provide advice to the OPCC on a range of legal issues.
12. To assist Senior lawyers with the training of junior members of the team.
13. Proactively assist with communicating legal updates and new caselaw to the team and wider organisation.
14. Participate in the Saturday duty rota.

Experience and Qualifications
1. Qualified solicitor, Barrister or FILEX with rights of audience in England and Wales
2. Advocacy experience in at least one of the Magistrates, County Courts, Tribunals or Misconduct proceedings
3. Excellent oral and written communication skills
5. A comprehensive knowledge and understanding of ECHR, Civil Procedure Rules, Criminal Law and knowledge of the
6. Principles of obtaining civil preventative orders, knowledge of employment Tribunal matters and Police Misconduct

Regulations
1. Previous experience of handling contentious matters generally
2. Ability to manage and organise own workload effectively and assist others
3. Ability to act under pressure and respond quickly to changing and conflicting demands
4. Demonstrate good team player skills
5. Good computer literacy skills including experience of common Microsoft packages
6. Excellent legal research and analytical skills
7. Ability to supervise and provide training within the team and to wider clients.
