Diabetic Retinopathy is a complication of diabetes, diabetes affecting the blood vessels in the retina (capillaries) which become blocked and damage the sight of the eye. The most common cause of sight loss in the working population.

The role of the DES SLBS Grader is to perform Slit-Lamp Bio-microscopy
examinations for the purpose of diabetic retinal checks and grade to a national standard.

The role of the DES SLBS Grader is to perform Slit-Lamp Bio-microscopy
examinations for the purpose of diabetic retinal checks, the post holder will also complete general screening clinics using an NW8 fundus camera and OCT. The position requires Arbitration/ROG grading experience in line with national standards.

This is an opportunity to join Cornwall’s Diabetic Eye Screening Programme whose centre is based at Royal Cornwall Hospital, Truro. The Programme screens over 32,000 patients.

Each year in 90 locations throughout Cornwall. We are looking for an enthusiastic, self-motivated person who is experienced and qualified in this field, to run SLBS assessments and have a high standard of grading diabetic retinopathy to ROG level. The post holder needs excellent communication and organisational skills and SLBS experience.

Supervise where needed and train the screening team, to ensure that all
members of the screening and grading team comply with regular
assessments to meet national standards.

To be responsible for referral outcome (ROG), SLBS and arbitration image
grading under the guidance of the clinical lead.

To undertake screening and surveillance clinics as required.

To be proficient in the use of optical coherence tomography (OCT).

Problem solve, equipment testing for cameras and computers.

Monitor all grading queues under guidance from Programme Manager to
ensure timely grading of all images.

Import all date and images from Digital Surveillance (DS) OCT clinics into
software.

Prepare for quarterly audits working with the programme manager for the
programme board.

Attend programme board meetings.

Input outcomes from the HES and SLBS clinics into programme software.

Work closely with the programme manager, screening Lead and clinical
lead.
- In-depth knowledge of cameras and software and able to help/advise staff

with any technical problems and screening issues.

Liaise with software and camera suppliers.

Speak to patients when required about their screening results.

Update and implement policies and procedures documents for screening
and grading in conjunction with the programme manager.

Order and maintain stocks of Tropicamide and other dilation drops.

When required set up clinic equipment and operate a non-mydriatic camera,
undertake fundus photography and download images onto a central server.

To be supervise the grading queues, bringing urgent referrals to the
attention of the clinical lead Ophthalmologist.

Attend weekly meetings with Screening lead, clinical lead and programme
manager.

Carry out proficiently and safely the movement of a digital fundus camera
(27kgs) equipment between county-wide surgeries, being aware of acting in accordance with Trust manual handling protocols.

Use hospital medical software as required, Maxims, Medisoft, OptoMize and Microsoft office software for report writing.

Adhere to all Trust policies and procedures and maintain accurate patient
record keeping.

To carry out any other duties that may be reasonably required by the
programme manager and clinical lead.
