London, United Kingdom SOAS University of London Full time

**Job Title**:Post-Doctoral Research Assistant

**Department**:Politics and International Studies

**Contract Type **Fixed term - until 31 December 2025

**Salary**:Grade 6 - £31,834 - £38,213 per annum inclusive of London Allowance.

**Hours**:35 hours per week

**About SOAS**

SOAS University of London is the leading Higher Education institution in Europe specialising in the study of Asia, Africa and the Middle East. SOAS is positioned to play a leading role in reimagining higher education globally, with a new strategic plan as the basis for institutional renewal and revitalisation. SOAS is committed to student responsiveness and research intensity, and is moving towards a new model of international partnerships which is responsive to the transnational character of our global challenges.

**About the Department**

The Department of Politics and International Studies is a recognised centre of excellence in research and teaching known for its deep engagement with the politics and international relations of the Global South. We are guided by a strong sense of purpose as an empirical, conceptual, practical and, above all, critical resource for academic and non-academic colleagues with a focus on these regions.

The Department hosts a range of world-leading research centres and clusters exploring issues of conflict, racial, gender, transitional and transformative justice, migration, comparative political thought, global security and responses to structural inequality.

**About the Role**

The Post-Doctoral Research Assistant will provide independent research and administrative support to the Leverhulme Trust-funded project, “Renewing Positive Complementarity: Reframing Justice Relations after Atrocity”. The project is led by the Principal Investigator, Prof. Phil Clark (SOAS), and four Co-Investigators, Prof. Dan Plesch (SOAS), Dr. Nicola Palmer (King’s College London), Prof. Cath Collins (Ulster) and Dr. Leah Owen (Swansea).

The project rationale is as follows:
Research into post-atrocity justice often assumes a constructive relationship between international institutions such as the International Criminal Court and domestic courts. Through the concept of "positive complementarity", many commentators argue that international institutions play a vital top-down role in building domestic capacity. This, however, overlooks more complex interplays, involving racial and colonial dimensions and power differentials, that affect international law’s ability to strengthen or to hinder domestic systems. Through historical and current case studies in Latin America, Europe and Africa, this project examines a range of justice interactions - in the courtroom and in the streets - that go beyond the linear international-to-national transmission of norms and practices assumed by the "positive complementarity" paradigm.

The role-holder’s responsibilities will include:

- To contribute single
- and co-authored publications as outputs of the overall project
- To provide literature reviews and other desk-based analysis that contribute to the publications of the Principal Investigator and Co-Investigators
- To organise UK-based seminars and workshops associated with the project
- To provide logístical support for the team’s fieldwork and attendance at international conferences and workshops
- To support the Principal Investigator in reporting to the funder on the progress of the project

**About You**

The successful applicant will have a detailed knowledge of the key transitional justice and international debates relevant to this project. They will also be able to combine research and publishing skills with administrative acumen. This includes demonstrating a capacity to produce high quality written outputs to deadline; to present research findings at workshops, seminars and conferences; and to help with the administration of research projects and events.

On a personal level, the successful applicant will be able to demonstrate an ability to work in a small, dynamic research team; to collaborate with a range of academic, policy and practitioner partners in multiple international settings; and to articulate a clear sense of how this role would provide a springboard to their later career.

Applicants should hold a PhD in Politics, Law, Development Studies, Anthropology or another social science or humanities discipline relevant to the overall Leverhulme project.

Further information on the key criteria for the role can be found in the Job Description and Personal Specification, along with a full list of duties and responsibilities.

**How to Apply**

Closing date: 28 April 2023

Interviews will provisionally be held in the week commencing 1 May 2023.
