**REPORTING TO**:Head of Species Management

**ROLE SUMMARY**: To support the species conservation team at Pensthorpe, particularly in relation to the management, feeding, and breeding of the species of the bird collection as well as assisting with the corncrake breeding programme and curlew headstarting projects. You will undertake a range of tasks in all weathers, with a focus on caring for and feeding our collection of birds as well as assisting in park warden duties and contributing to an exceptional visitor experience.

**TERM**: Permanent contract

**WORKING PATTERN**:3 week day days, plus one weekend in every three.

**Main Responsibilities**

As part of our experienced team, you will contribute to providing a naturally inspiring environment for our visitors whilst furthering our conservation aims. Your natural passion for conservation and the natural world, along with your friendly and engaging personality, will ensure that visitors of all ages will feel inspired and connected with nature.

**Avicultural warden duties**

1. Assisting in the Corncrake Translocation and the Curlew Head starting projects.

2. Assisting in the captive breeding and rearing of other species.

3. Feeding, monitoring and reporting diet consumption as required

4. Carrying out routine husbandry, daily monitoring, recording and reporting on animal health.

5. Conducting warden walks and talks, bird feeding, demonstrations and assisting with presentation and special events such as ‘meet the warden’.

6. Cleaning and maintenance of assigned facilities.

7. Checking for, documenting and reporting structural or mechanical problems of assigned facilities.

8. Participating in non-routine health and husbandry activities such as animal transports, animal introductions, and the medication of specimens.

9. Ensuring high standards of presentation and maintenance of the site at all times.

10. Ensuring the welfare of the collection at all times.

11. Carrying out general upkeep of the enclosures and park including, pruning, strimming, mowing, fencing, bin emptying, and general cleaning and tidying.

12. Being an ambassador for Pensthorpe, showing exceptional standards of customer care at all times, including visitor interaction such as giving directions and answering questions.

**Personal Specification**

**Qualifications**

Essential:

- Good basic education, with GCSE (A-C) or equivalent
- Full current driving licence
- Own Car

Desirable:

- Animal Management qualification

**Experience**

Essential:

- Practical relevant experience and knowledge of animal management, ideally working with birds
- Competent in the use of IT, Microsoft office programmes and databases

Desirable:

- Experience of operating under a zoo licence
- Demonstrable experience of accurate record keeping
- Experience in gardens or zoo maintenance
- Previous experience in a visitor-facing role within a zoo or other visitor attraction
- Working knowledge of Health and Safety

**Additional Information**

This position is a job share and will require a flexible working pattern around a three days in seven, plus a rostered weekend working pattern of one weekend in three regularly, and the availability for seasonal event and variation to hours and the role requires..
