This post provides the opportunity to be part of a highly capable scientific advice team who are critical to the development and delivery of technologically exciting programmes enhancing operational capabilities for the British Army.
The work is dynamic, fast-paced, and involves engagement across Defence, with partners across Government and with international colleagues, as well as significant senior leadership engagement. Employed by the Ministry of Defence (MOD) Defence Science and Technology (DST) team, you will be embedded within Army HQ, contributing to both the Army’s and the MOD Chief Scientific Adviser’s (CSA’s) objectives.
This Information Manoeuvre (IM) Scientific Adviser is part of a wider team of Army Scientific Advisers and is responsible for providing Science & Technology (S&T) support across the Futures, Programmes and Information Directorates of the Army with a focus on shaping and exploiting S&T investment. The role will involve combining the fast-moving technology landscape with the Army’s challenges, to advise on: S&T, Research, Development and Experimentation, capability planning, innovation and, procurement.
In addition, the Adviser will develop a strategy and plan to provide analysis and evidence to support IM decision making across the Army. This exciting role will expose you to the Defence customer context, giving you trusted access to key decision-makers and the chance to build networks with a wide range S&T specialists, stakeholders and suppliers. By linking S&T opportunities and developments with Army Capability Challenges, you will support the Army to deliver technology-led modernisation in an era of rapidly changing threats and opportunities. The post will also be central to the ongoing reorganisation of Army Operating Model, ensuring appropriate science linkages are in place to support the organisation as it transforms.
The IM Science Adviser covers a broad range of cross-cutting technology areas, including communications, Intelligence Surveillance, Target Acquisition and Reconnaissance (ISTAR), Cyber and Electromagnetic Activities (CEMA), Influence, Digitisation, Human Machine Teaming and Artificial Intelligence. The role will require engagement across several Driving and Responding S&T Programmes, and the ability to understand, assimilate and articulate the most promising opportunities to the Army.
This position is advertised at 37 hours per week and will involve UK-wide and potentially international travel.
**Job description**:
Defence Science and Technology (DST) Scientific Advisers provide impartial critical thinking on S&T issues into the heart of Senior decision-making within Defence and Security. Employed by MOD Head Office, DST and embedded out with our customers, the role’s contribution will be key to delivering the MOD CSA strategy of maximising the impact of S&T for Defence and Security. DST works under the direction of MOD’s CSA to maximise the impact of S&T for the Defence and Security of the UK. It commissions MOD’s Core Research Programme, which is delivered by the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl), industry and academia. It drives the effectiveness and efficiency of our national security, the capability of our Armed Forces and underpins our international relationships with allies. S&T is a critical force multiplier for Defence and plays an increasing role in Defence thinking and culture.
Specifically, the IM Science Adviser is an ambassador for S&T across both the Futures and Information Directorates, and linking in with the Programmes Directorate to optimise S&T exploitation. Operating as a part of a team of Scientific Advisers across MOD, you will ensure S&T can help MOD to achieve strategic influence for the UK, be responsive to future opportunities and threats, and make decisions based on evidence. This role will collaborate with a team of Scientific Advisers across the Army and wider Defence, maintaining, and enhancing the interface between relevant teams and the S&T enterprise to maximise the impact of S&T.
