The role of Caretaker plays a vital part to ensure the smooth and efficient day to day operation of the campuses in order to provide our learners and staff with the best possible learning environment to fulfil their potential. Caretakers are an integral part of the college team, providing a valued support service within the Directorship of Finance & Estates.
It is a demanding and physical role with a significant amount of time spent actively walking around buildings and the sites.
The position of Caretaker in Coleg Sir Gâr offers an interesting and varied role for a person who has the appropriate skills, enthusiasm, flexibility and a positive approach to work.
The college has 7 campuses located in Ammanford, Gelli Aur, Graig (Llanelli), Jobs Well (Carmarthen), Pibwrlwyd (Carmarthen), Aberystwyth and Cardigan.
The Graig Campus, located in Pwll, Llanelli, has several teaching blocks spread over a very large site including our recent building “ The Forge” next to our 3G pitch, which has a Performance gym, Sports Hall and Performance Theatre.
Teaching courses at Graig Campus include Engineering & Computing, A-levels, Health & Social Care and Foundation, Creative industries including Performing Arts, Media Studies, Music Technology, Sports, Public Services, Hair and Beauty, Business and Travel and Tourism.
Some blocks are stand alone including our Engineering Block which is located at the rear of the campus. The Hair and Beauty Block also houses, Public Services and Sports.
An “on call” rota system (Monday to Sunday) is operated on all campuses in order to ensure there is cover for emergency call outs. Attendance on site for alarm activation call outs or any other emergency is a fundamental condition of employment. Refer to Appendix 2 for “on call” rota system and payments. In addition, weekend work maybe required.
**Key Responsibilities**
The caretaker's role encompasses a range of responsibilities aimed at ensuring the security, maintenance, and functionality of the premises. This includes operating heating, lighting, and security alarm systems, conducting fire alarm tests, monitoring fire doors and firefighting equipment, as well as assisting with evacuations. The caretaker is also responsible for water hygiene checks, meter readings, waste management, recycling efforts, and outdoor cleanliness. Maintenance tasks involve minor repairs, redecoration, and grounds maintenance. The caretaker collaborates with the Estates Department, assists in traffic management, sets up rooms, and performs porterage duties. They're expected to report property damage, safety concerns, and promptly address health and safety issues while maintaining efficient communication with the Campus Manager. This role requires adaptability, IT literacy, and accessibility for on-call situations, ensuring effective campus management.
