**Phlebotomist/ Healthcare Assistant with a view to training as a General Practice Assistant (GPA)**
**Introduction**
We require an experienced phlebotomist to carryout patient facing clinics in the surgery. Those with additional primary healthcare experience i.e. blood pressure reading, injections, ECGs, dressing is desirable but if not a willingness to learn is essential.
The role will also involve some healthcare related administrative responsibilities i.e. processing letters for patients regarding blood tests results and administrative support for baby immunisation clinics so a good understanding of IT and computer systems is required.
**Hours**
**F**ull time (37.5 hours)
Hours are worked Monday to Friday plus occasional Saturdays (apprx 6 per year)
**Rates of Pay**
**Core tasks**
- Phlebotomy
- Urinalysis including responsibility for the correct and safe management of the specimens process including collection, labelling, handling, use of correct and clean containers, storage and transport arrangements
- Re-stocking of clinician rooms with medical consumables
- ECGs
- Height, weight and BMI checks
- Lifestyle advice
- Be able to take vital signs and observations and identify signs of improvement, report any deteriorations or concerns, e.g. pulse, blood pressure, respirations, oxygen saturations, peak flow, blood glucose levels, ECG, assessing nutrition and hydration
- Management and maintenance of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including provision, ordering, availability and ongoing correct usage by staff.
- Ensure safe storage, rotation and disposal of vaccines and drugs is undertaken. Where appropriate, oversee the monitoring, stock control and documentation of controlled drug usage according to legal requirements
- Stock control of medical consumables, drugs and equipment
**Core Administrative tasks**
- Processing of home blood pressure monitor service
- Processing of patient letters following GP review of blood results
- Administration of cervical cytology
- Administration of all cancer screening i.e. bowel and breast
- Administration of baby immunisations
- Organisation of cancer care reviews
**Enhanced Tasks (appropriate support and training will be provided)**
- Carry out Chronic Disease Management annual/cyclical reviews delegated by a supervising Nurse or senior colleague. Reviews to include: chronic diseases NHS health checks, new patient checks.
- Monitor and support the lead nurse with the management of patients with long-term conditions / chronic diseases, using a holistic patient centred approach.
- Vaccinations and Immunisations i.e. flu
- Administering of Intra Muscular & Sub-cutaneous injections, including B12, depo
- and Gonadotropin
- releasing hormone (GnRh) injections.
